TPM captured the video of this weekend’s Saturday Night Live cold open, and it will probably come as a surprise to many readers for the reasons I’ll detail below. Their Obama impersonator, Jay Pharoah, was featured doing a fake presser on C-SPAN where he introduced Ebola czar Ron Klain, who took questions about his qualifications for the job. Rather than trying to scatter the smack talk across both parties, this was pretty much a mockery of Barack Obama’s entire second term, with the fake President himself doing the mocking.
“Some people want to criticize the way our administration has handled this crisis, and its true we made a few mistakes early on. But I assure you, that was nowhere near as bad as how we handled the ISIS situation, our varied Secret Service mishaps, or the scandals of the IRS and the NSA,” he said. “And I dont know if you guys remember, but the Obamacare website had some pretty serious problems too.”
He said that considering the rest of the second term, “this whole Ebola thing is probably one of my greatest accomplishments.”
The fact that they took down the Obama administration is not that shocking in and of itself. There’s only so much material to go around, and while the overall arc of the show leans heavily to the left, they’ve taken jabs at Democrats in the past, much the same way that Jon Stewart does. But what I found most surprising about this was the timing.
Historically, these shows will demonstrate their allegedly bipartisan nature by smacking around liberals only in the “safe seasons” well away from elections. But when the chips are down and voting day is near, they seem to reliably focus their fire exclusively on Republicans. One of the best examples was the late summer and fall of 2008. when SNL was featuring Tina Fey on a nearly weekly basis as their personification of Sarah Palin. Yes, it’s true that they had a Hillary Clinton character as well, and she was shown as being self centered and nasty, but between the two she fared much better than the portrayal of Palin, who constantly came off as being stupid, vapid, clueless, and essentially a cheerleader puppet for McCain.
This episode is their second to last before the midterms and they’re currently enjoying something of a resurgence in their ratings. That’s why it’s startling to see such an unabashed take-down of nearly all of Obama’s second term scandals now. The video follows.
I saw it, and it’s so close to reality that it was almost NOT satire! hahaha
Ain't got no excuses now, Lorne.
President Obola...
Yep.
I remember back during 2000 when Will Ferell did a funny impersonation of Al Gore. It’s not new for them to poke fun of Democrats from time to time.
In summary -
“compared to all our other screwups and corruption, this ebola issue looks pretty good!”
I personally found plenty of bizarre and awkward things that Obama has been saying since the 2008 campaign. To each his own, I guess.
Hail Czar!
In a way, he's correct. Obama doesn't "have a thing" - he doesn't have a valid birth certificate, he doesn't have a college record that can be seen, he doesn't have any papers written while he was supposedly the editor of the Harvard Law Review, he doesn't have any patriotism for the United States of America, he doesn't have any appreciation for the blessings of this country - feel free to add your own to the list.
The In The Tank Obama media is dying as Americans sick of their lying to cover for Obama.
Now SNLs rating start to RISE after they finally start mocking the White House insane clown posse.
The only thing the media cares more for than Obama is themselves and if mocking and actually reporting the truth about the administration turns their viewership implosion around Obama is toast.
Except, of course , for the NY Times, Boston Globe and Washington Post. They will go out of business or hope for a Republican to be elected President for them to bash before they criticize their god
Yes, Obama is no longer the “cool kid”,
but what you’re seeing is a pivot.
The public now sees the “stink” that is Obama,
but the left still seeks power,
so they pivot away from him to the next power wielder.
So six years into the Oblunder’s presidency and finally SNL finds the balls to actually parody him, now that he’s become toxic?
Wow! That’s liberal “courage” for you.
Yeah, right. The golfing alone..., let alone all the corruption and non-common sense things Obola does.
Yes, they have poked fun at Dems. sometimes. But the ratio is probably 10-1 of times and events in which they made fun of Bush or Republicans, vs. poking fun at Dems. and Obama.
Thinking of Hussein's penchant for overwhelming the system, it is kind of rewarding when his crap is so overwhelming that even SNL is having to address it.
Chris Kattan did a scathing one about Clinton and Mark Rich
Ratings and money are the ultimate trumps and while they will only do it kicking and screaming and probably bi@#$ing about having their arms twisted by the suits who run NBC, even knee jerk leftists like Lorne Michaels must know that their little franchise will prosper if they follow today’s Obama as incompetent buffoon zeitgeist. Even the expansive rug the media have used to cover Obama’s serial failures and betrayals isn’t adequate and is leaking raw sewage at the edges. The odor is something they can no longer get away with denying. And besides, taking the opposite tack is the only way they can try and remain faintly relevant and profitable.
