Ping!
Beardles?
I thought he was Jewish.
Looks kinda like a beard to me. Besides, the bible said he had a beard.
Maybe engraving a beard clogs up the image too much.
Artist’s choice.
what the hell is ce
My church has a picture of Noah standing outside his ark, and it doesn’t look a thing like him!
I learned a new word today!
In art history class, many years ago, I saw a Roman encaustic painting that had a beardless Jesus. The professor assumed that he was painted the way a Roman who had never seen him would paint him. Spain was a Roman outpost, so it would not surprise me if the image was also Roman style.
meaningless really
Nobody thinks the image describes how they really looked
I look forward to meeting him in person someday. Only then will I know for sure.........or care one way or another.
Isaiah 50:6 says that He had a beard, is the translation in dispute?
I’ve always hated depictions of Him with long hair. Not only does it directly ignore Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 11:14 (God wouldn’t put that in the Bible if Jesus had long hair, and as far as I’m aware the translation to English of that verse isn’t particularly controversial), it also makes Him look like a sissy liberal, which He is NOT.
Being of that time and place, descended from the people from whom he descended, and given the Biblical reference to Jesus Christ being bearded, he was bearded is the answer that a Christian should give.
That said, it’s not exactly a question to go down fighting about. This artist from so long ago had reason to depict Jesus Christ in that manner. It doesn’t comport to what we understand now, but there it is.
For what it’s worth. Not much, imho.
When discussing history regarding Jesus Christ, it is downright OFFENSIVE to refer to it as "C.E.".
Instead of depicting Jesus, Peter and Paul, it may be Jesus, Moses, and Elias, as in Matthew 17 verses 1 thru 4.
THEY may believe it’s Christ, but I’ll take it with a pound or two of salt. Who, of those who saw and knew and lived with Christ would have pictorially recorded His Likeness?
It was forbidden in the Jewish heart and mind to make graven images. All the ORIGINAL Christians were of Jewish extraction.
The clincher for me is: This flies crosswise of the image on the Shroud of Turin. No sale!
However, I know that 4th century Spain was under Roman rule.
I know what images popped up when I Googled "rome fourth century hairstyles", and they looked quite similar to this place. I also know that pictures of Romans with 4th century hairstyles (specifically identifed as such) popped up in the images when I Googled "spain 4th century hairstyles", but no photos of 4th century Spanish hairstyles did . . .
Like it says in the Bible..,
...Jesus shaves.
maybe it’s a picture of Mohammad instead....uh oh...
No beard.
Beard.
A Jew without a do?
No way, Yahweh...
