Guidance for Safe Handling of Human Remains of Ebola Patients in U. S. Hospitals and Mortuaries

These recommendations give guidance on the safe handling of human remains that may contain Ebola virus and are for use by personnel who perform postmortem care in U.S. hospitals and mortuaries. In patients who die of Ebola virus infection, virus can be detected throughout the body. Ebola virus can be transmitted in postmortem care settings by laceration and puncture with contaminated instruments used during postmortem care, through direct handling of human remains without appropriate personal protective equipment, and through splashes of blood or other body fluids (e.g. urine, saliva, feces) to unprotected mucosa (e.g., eyes, nose, or mouth) which occur during postmortem care.



• Only personnel trained in handling infected human remains, and wearing PPE, should touch, or move, any Ebola-infected remains.
• Handling of human remains should be kept to a minimum.
• Autopsies on patients who die of Ebola should be avoided. If an autopsy is necessary, the state health department and CDC should be consulted regarding additional precautions.

Recently deceased bodies apparently are the most virulent of all. It may violate their custom but his body should be sprayed down thoroughly with chlorine bleach or some other antiviral and promptly cremated. Everywhere he has been in that hospital needs to be decontaminated promptly as well.

Cameraman they air lifted out of Liberia is on the same medication Duncan was on...let's hope they began it soon enough that it works for him....Duncan was pretty far into this disease before it was avaiable, but it was given to Duncan the very day they authorized it's use.

It’s not a long or wordy article. Seems to cover all the concerns we are describing. Hospitals caring for confirmed cases of Ebola should be required to use one truck exclusively for transporting the deceased to a crematorium repository. No handing off, no transfers, no caskets - just burn the body ASAP.

It’s going to raise the fear factor among the public and make it a lot harder for Precedent Obola to continue allowing travelers from infected countries to enter the U.S.

If this thing goes hot I would not be surprised at a sterilization bombing or massive aerial spray. National security will be put in jeopardy if too many cities go down with Ebola.
