Psychologists Are Learning How to Convince Conservatives to Take Climate Change Seriously
NY Magazine ^ | 1 October 2014 | Jesse Singal

Posted on 10/01/2014 2:54:52 PM PDT by oblomov

Last week’s People's Climate March drew 400,000 people onto the streets of Manhattan and a great deal of international attention to a subject of dire urgency. But some were skeptical about the event’s overall significance. “The march slogan was, ‘to change everything, we need everyone,’ which is telling, because it won’t change everything, because it didn’t include everyone,” wrote David Roberts of Grist. “Specifically, it won’t change American politics because it didn’t include conservatives.” True enough.

If there weren’t such a stark divide between American conservatives and almost everyone else on the question of the existence and importance of climate change — a divide that can approach 40 points on some polling questions — the political situation would be very different. So if any progress on climate change is going to be made through the American political system — apart from executive orders by Democratic presidents — it is going to have to somehow involve convincing a lot of conservatives that yes, climate change is a threat to civilization.

How do you do that? The answer has more to do with psychology than politics.

The practice of tailoring a political message to a particular group is commonplace, of course. But the climate activist community has broadly failed to understand just how differently conservatives and liberals see the world on certain issues, and, as a result, just how radically different messages targeting conservatives should look.

Related Stories How to Win Your Next Political Argument Awareness Is Overrated “Although climate scientists update, appropriately, their models after ten years of evidence, climate-science communicators haven’t,” said Dan Kahan, a professor of law and psychology at Yale who studies how people respond to information challenging their beliefs. Luckily, social and political psychologists are on the case.

Liberals never cared about the innocent. They work to destroy innocent people. It’s their stated goal in life. What’s the historic body count number up to now from Democide?

Abortions, Socialist Utopia’s, Communism?

it is the old quote.

A civilized man can act like a savage but a savage can not act like a civilized man.

liberals are savages (see occupy protesters, burning man druggies, potheads, government handout zombies)

liberals can not see civilization let alone be civilized.

Conservatives should reach out to children and cultivate civilized minds there. The 60’s rejects are stuck in “naked in mud waiting for adults to bring them food” mode.

I have always taken climate change seriously, I just don’t take their anthropogenic GLOBAL warming seriously. They act as if the words climate change can only refer to their BS, climate change could mean all kinds of things. When the ice age starts they won’t refer to that as climate change because they have reserved that term for global warming.

Maybe, instead of just getting more and more strident with the “climate change” message, they should try presenting the scientific case for it. If they show us the facts and studies that establish that the earth is really heating up because of changes in CO2 levels, then we might be convinced. Most of us realize that simply appending “because of climate change” to any observation about any natural phenomenon does not make that event a result of climate.

There is a reason why they don’t publicize the scientific case.

Sheeeeeyit. How many out of that 400,000 even had an inkling about what the march was supposedly for?

I'm guessing about a dozen.

The climate is always changing. The earth moves and the sun has flares that subside dramatically, which guarantees climate change.

was searching for something else but read your post on the magnetic field. There have been many quakes in oklahoma, do the seismologists take into account the geological make up of the crust where the quakes occur? Fracking is being blamed of course

Yes, they do. Faults are one example. They also consider materials.

I've only had an interest in specific bits of geological knowledge because of related technical work (drilling, construction and the like) and tend to read a little more at times.

With my lack of comprehensive education in mind, it doesn't seem that using liquid pressure to separate rock in one instance in a very localized spot would be likely to cause an earthquake. One might point to drilling exactly into a fault and inadvertently lubricating it with liquid pressure, but what would the chance of that happening?

My guess is an unusual bit of extra outer core movement--not the crust or inner core but the outer magnetic core of iron, nickel, etc., below the crust. There might also be faults or magma boils deeper in the crust that are not as apparent with contemporary technology used from our surface.

But then my guess does not come from a foundation of greater knowledge found in others. On the other hand, though, some others might be a little reluctant to speculate publicly much on some possible effects of a magnetic field flip (panic, opportunism, etc.).

By the way, some who are much more educated are guessing that the north magnetic pole might, after reaching some particular point in its travel, move around 50 degrees within one year. Maybe we’ll see, if the deviation continues to accelerate enough. Hard to tell, though, since the NOAA revised a list of previously derived data, and the other more well known labs are not issuing much news for the general public.

If you really want to cause some panic try reading the chapter of revelation I read last night (actually I outlined the book but it’s in 16).

There is an earthquake that is so great, I would call it the quake of the entire earth that moves all the plates and probably shakes the world so hard that like shaking a bowl of sugar to even the contents, that Jerusalem is split into thirds, All cities of the Gentiles crumble, every island “fled away” or probably sinks as do the mountains.

No mountains, no islands. As if the world is spun and the tectonic plates finally come to rest like puzzle pieces in place, no rising, no falling, (I personally would like to see a new continent in the midst of the Pacific to accommodate all the new babies that will be born due to never, ever having them be sacrificed to any false gods of convenience)just the earth at peace.

I personally love mountains. I am quite distressed at their demise, and hope it is metaphorical. Probably not though, since the next terror used to try and get the people to ask God for help is hundred pound hail balls. Global warming.

Do you know why the magnetic field repulses asteroids? I vaguely remember hearing that or when it is flipping the meteors come in?
