Shirley Deege is a proud Republican. For as long as she can remember, the nurse has been voting for Pat Roberts in the 1980s, when he represented a vast patchwork of dusty plains hamlets in the House; in 1996, when he first ran for the Senate; and every six years after that.
Looking back over my life, Im wondering, What major things has he done for Kansas? Im coming up empty, said Deege, 53, as she sipped coffee while waiting for Roberts to arrive at the county fairgrounds in Kinsley this week.
Hes spent so much time in Washington, she added. I know he has a house in Virginia. Dodge City is supposed to be his home, just up the highway, but I dont hear of him coming back too much.
But this week, Roberts came back. His reelection campaign, which was supposed to be a sure bet in this heavily Republican state, has transformed into the most surprisingly close Senate race in the nation. Roberts showed up Tuesday morning in Deeges home town of Kinsley (population 1,457) with Robert J. Dole, 91, a former Senate Republican leader, presidential nominee and ailing Kansas legend, who is in the midst of a farewell tour of his native state...

The only thing about Pat Roberts coming up “empty”, is that the “independent” running against him is coming up even more empty.
Roberts has been largely phoning it in for Kansas for years, but his only virtue is that he is “not a Democrat”, though at times that characteristic is not especially significant.
The thing here...is that the Republican leadership in Kansas should have sat down three years ago...discussed replacing Roberts, and they simply refused to do it. So you have a Republican horse that can’t race anymore...stuck racing...and just trying to win so that they can get to 2016 and replace him with someone else that they are hiding in the background.
I see the Democrats eventually having the same problem with Feinstein in 2018...running her when she’s really not capable of performing her duties anymore.
I’d also put McConnell on the same list.
Shirley, stop being a useful idiot. The Stupid Party doesn’t give a damn about you.
The GOP will NOT win the Senate.
Did this fool vote for Roberts in the primary? If so she should STFU.
Come on, Shirley, don't be too hard on Roberts. I'm sure there is a Pat Roberts Cultural Center or bridge somewhere that resulted from pork he shoveled to Kansas. That, and the fact that now the federal debt burden on everyone in Kansas has doubled since Roberts came to office and played "go along to get along" with the Dems his entire time there.
Exactly what it comes down to. It’s a no-brainer when it comes down to what is at stake. Roberts can be replaced in the next election or he retires and we can replace him with someone even more conservative.

I thought the guy running against Roberts was a Democrat in Independents clothing!!!
What’s wrong with Feinstein?
I find it HIGHLY AMUSING that the Washington Post was happy to find a Republican in Kansas who doesn’t like Roberts....but cannot seem to find Democrat voters who don’t like Obama.
Crazy, ain’t it? You’d think they were agenda driven at the Washington comPost.
Apparently, Milton Wolf was fairly beaten by Roberts. The problem is that Roberts has been an absentee senator. In the same way Wolf had to suffer the results of a no-recognition campaign, apparently Roberts will suffer from a “not recognized around here lately” problem.
In this political climate, a politician buying a home in Virginia is the height of stupidity. Have these people never heard of renting???
For all it opposition to our tea party candidates, the establishment keeps launching these old-timers, and they must know that that’s a long-term losing strategy. Even the GOP-E should admit that the human condition eventually has the young replacing the old.
Do not vote for Roberts.
He is a Washington insider who will continue to support the establishment.
We need a defeat these people to send the message that if you crush conservatives with money from lobbyists, then conservatives will not vote for you!
No, I disagree. He won his senate seat fair and square, and at this point the nation needs both the senate and house to be republican to block any more judicial appointments. My sense is that Ginsberg will quickly retire and be replaced in the lame duck if republicans win.
Anything else, however, must wait for the next president.
I will agree not to support Cochran in Mississippi, because that was a fraudulent election. We must oppose any election won by fraud, even if our own side.
But the rest of the field, I’ll vote republican unless it would be an anti-life or anti-gun candidate.
I don't understand some of the bile on FR regarding him. A couple comments seemed to bash him only because he's old.
The Tea Party couldn't come up with a better candidate than Wolf who did poorly. So conservatives should just vote for Roberts who votes conservatively.
The Washington Post had a hard enough time just finding Kansas.
If there was a “like” button on your post, I would hit the “like” button and agree.
It’s crazy how some here want us to give up what is a fairly conservative Senate seat (and I understand Roberts has his issues) but to replace him with an 0bama - Harry Reid libtard, is just insane. I will have no part of allowing the radical left to take this Senate seat.

Roberts has lived in Virginia for over 40 years. Before he became a Congressman, he was a congressional staffer. The last time that he lived in Kansas was when he was a senior at Kansas State University. He graduated in 1957. He believes that he is entitled to this seat for life.
That, however, does not imply that one should vote for Greg Orman. A man who will not declare his obvious political allegience and who will not stand up and say what he stands for cannot serve the people of this State. He is a phony who has determined that his only hope of winning is through the deceptive campaign that he is running.
“Even the GOP-E should admit that the human condition eventually has the young replacing the old.”
Tell that to President Cheney!
LOL
Roberts has an 86% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union.
Anyone wanting to hoping Roberts loses is either a closet liberal, politically stupid or someone that believes is wacky conspiracy theories that claim both parties are controlled by some global conspiracy. Such types should be planning for a civil war and not bother with politics. If Harry Reid is allowed to continue to pack the courts with far-left judges, that or state secession will be the only options left.
