Editor's note: It is the general policy of Northeast Ohio Media Group not to show images of people being killed. We chose to publish this video because it addresses questions that have been raised about the behavior of the suspect and the police.
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine released a surveillance video Wednesday showing John Crawford III being shot to death by police last month in a Dayton-area Walmart.
DeWine's release of the video and 9-1-1 recording coincided with a Greene County grand jury finding that Beavercreek police were justified in shooting the 22-year-old man, whom they believed was armed with a rifle.
In the footage, Crawford is seen talking on a cell phone and waving what turned out to be an air rifle at the end of a store aisle. Police arrived after a 9-1-1 caller reported that a man was waving around a gun and pointing it at people.

The caller was so excited to be “in the middle of the action!!!!” that he got a man killed. What do you want to bet that he called his mom, his best friend, maybe others and said “I was RIGHT THERE. I’m the one that called the cops!!!!” What do you want to bet he was proud of himself! wwwww
According to some here, he wasn’t doing anything that indicated he was a threat.
Even though I’ve been coming down hard on those looking to castrate the cops on this one...I respect your thoughtful comments...I also agree with your statements
His mistake cost two lives. Really tragic. :-( And, according to what I’ve read, he doesn’t sound sorry about it.
I’ve had to call 911 a few times myself, but every time I try to make sure that I’m not jumping to conclusions. The last time, I had to tell the 911 agent that a neighbor asked me to call and that I really didn’t know what was happening.
But this 911 caller seemed so sure of himself.
What's your point? I doubt you even watched the video.
Yea, you said it, swinging a gun around. And you support people doing this?
Half the posters on this thread are out of their minds over the actions of this nut
being perfectly normal and not worth Police attention.
I would've shot the punk too. That was no small toy BB gun by the looks of it.
And he was NOT just a couple isles over from the gun area. I bet 1/2 the people
in that store have no idea Walmart even sells guns, Including AR-15s.
Paramedics had to come and take me to the ER the other night. I looked out the door onto my screened in porch and saw a State Trooper looking around my stuff. As bad off as I was, I had to ask “Why are the cops here????!!!!!”
Turns out that somewhere, I suppose in my county, some paramedics were called on a false call and taken hostage. Now cops accompany them on each call.
I would have taken my paramedics hostage, I would have adopted them. They were wonderful, I loved them (in a motherly sort of way) Man, they were so patient and kind and competent.
God save me, save us all, from beings like you. I can’t even bring myself to call you a man.
don’t stay home, don’t give in to their tactics. Don’t endanger your life, but don’t give in and give up your Constitutional rights.
Are you all right?
No...but would you go waving your gun around in a public place as this guy did?
The cops probably didn’t see him wave his gun. They took the word of the Liar: Ronald Ritchie and shot Crawford down in cold blood.
No, I don’t respect the legal system any more.
I could have sworn I heard the cop at the tail end of that video looking over kitty litter watching him waving his gun and yell to him drop it before engaging...I could be wrong but that cop did say something before firing
I do think that 911 caller was at fault too, BUT...the police had time to scan the area, see no children or other potential victims, due diligence. Nope, they just walked up and shot a (stupid, thoughtless) man down where he stood.
He was trying to feel important and that’s about all!!!!
You wrote two sentences. The second one absolutely deflates the first and you make no sense.
Your “(if he truly did)” comment shows how much you watched the video. Which is to say Apparently not at all.
I absolutely do think the GJ would not have indicted the cops. When have they ever??(ok a case somewhere, once, I think) Cops are allowed to murder citizens these days.
According to me too, Jonty. He was talking on a white cell phone, just swinging what he’d picked up at WM, not even thinking, apparently.
Did you not see my comment at the end of the video? That should be proof enough that I did. I made that statement because there is no telling what he was flagging at the very end of that aisle. There is no.camera view of the end of that aisle.for all we know there was a free flow of people while this whack job I waving what appears to be a large rifle.
