Editor's note: It is the general policy of Northeast Ohio Media Group not to show images of people being killed. We chose to publish this video because it addresses questions that have been raised about the behavior of the suspect and the police.
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine released a surveillance video Wednesday showing John Crawford III being shot to death by police last month in a Dayton-area Walmart.
DeWine's release of the video and 9-1-1 recording coincided with a Greene County grand jury finding that Beavercreek police were justified in shooting the 22-year-old man, whom they believed was armed with a rifle.
In the footage, Crawford is seen talking on a cell phone and waving what turned out to be an air rifle at the end of a store aisle. Police arrived after a 9-1-1 caller reported that a man was waving around a gun and pointing it at people.

It is what cops do, now. That is why I won’t call a cop for anything. When the cop shows up maybe he will nab a bad guy, or maybe he will find and shoot your dog or maybe he will shoot you.
Even looks like they finished him off after Crawford dropped the toy gun.
...
He went down quickly and dropped the gun, but then he got up quickly and moved toward the gun and the police officer.
Action beats reaction every single time. If he is holding a gun, you have already lost the gun fight.
i am also chp holder for years. has nothing to do with this guy obviously OPEN carry...at the VERY LEAST the leo could have said freeze hands up drop the weapon OR ANYTHING before they took his life. sure they dont know if its real and if he pointed it at them.then by all means let him have it.i just dont see that in this video. i dont expect to be gunned down when i OPEN carry one of my weapons outside of my property.but i guess this day and time i better rethink that or just stay the hell at home

Oh, sure - Erik Scott "had an MBA" - but I'll bet he flunked "Obeying Multiple & Simultaneous Conflicting Orders To The Satisfaction Of Trigger-Happy King's Men 101" in college.
Oh, wait - he DID flunk in real life. Such an easy class - the rest of us peasants would surely have no trouble in passing...
That is the norm. If a cop sees a ump in your clothes he can shoot you and then say he thought it was a gun. That is far as it will go. He is Justified.
First, in my opinion the 911 caller clearly lead the Police to think this was much more dangerous than it appeared. It appeared the suspect made a move towards the Police just before he was shot, but without seeing the vantage point of the shooting officer who knows. Maybe he thought there was a kid down one of the aisles and wanted to make sure he did not open fire. While some people are claiming it is an open carry state; you still don’t go around waving a gun or rifle in the air. It turns out to be a BB gun, but the Police did not know and they are not going to take a chance.
That’s right - there was a 37yo woman who became so upset when the police shot Crawford that she suffered a heart attack and died right there in Walmart.
Care to tell us where the count is on the video, of him pointing the toy at the kids, as the caller excitedly told the police?
There was no urgency to this situation and the kid was already in a corner of the store, they could have yelled from cover, killing him and then looking into it, was in the wrong order.
If you respect the law and especially a grand jury where the burden of proof to recommend bringing charges is EXTREMELY LOW...then either you respect the findings or you do not....there are many in here to quickly convict...question..imply wrong doing in any situation on any cop...many have their faults but when they get it right we must say thank you...how you can find justification for what this guy did is beyond comprehension...it’s as if you want to point towards wrong doing on the part of the officers..if someone is dumb enough to openly wave a gun they deserve to go down...had I been there as a CCW carrier I’d have dropped him as well no question.

The incident at a Las Vegas Costco (reply #20) had a similar thing happen that led to the tragedy. Mr Scott was shopping and "At some point he bent over and his shirt rode up, exposing the pistol he had concealed at the small of his back. A Costco employee saw the holstered sidearm and told Scott he was not allowed to have the weapon in the store. Scott replied that he had a permit and the right to carry his weapon. He then went back to shopping. The employee called over a manager, who informed a 20-something security guard, who made a 911 call to police . . . ."
A man with a gun, a 9-1-1 call, a crowd of people, officers responding . . . .
The man shot dead by the police was white and of no concern to the Obama-Holder Dept of Just Us and the media -- at least not to the extent that it would be it they could have made a racial issue of the death.
When I have access to a computer I will.
I guess a grand jury where the bar is EXTREMELY LOW on bringing charges begged to differ. Are you saying the Grand jury who has access to maybe a little more information was wrong? I get it most want to tar feather and burn at the stake Damn near any cop in any circumstance. You either believe in grand juries or you do not...
There’s some more information out there about the 911 caller.
At first, the stories referred to the 911 caller as an “ex-Marine.” That sounded curious - because anyone who’s served in the Marines never calls themselves “ex.” Once a Marine, always a Marine.
It turns out, according to the latest stories, that he enlisted in the Marines but was kicked out due to “fraudulent enlistment,” whatever that means.
So, was the caller simply mistaken? Or does he have a history of overreacting or lying? Anyone can make this kind of mistake; but, given that two people died as a result, we have to ask these questions.
You probably won’t need to, I doubt that you will any argument against the claim of him pointing at the kids being made up.
The caller really threw in some zingers in his efforts to pump up the situation.
how do you 'mock aim a gun"?
you don't walk around with an unholstered gun or a rifle in a crowded store - duh... and you don't wave a gun around in a crowded store -
A grand jury did not find your conclusion
If Mr. Scott had been black his name would be right up there with the names screaming from the the MSM employees "reporting". Holder would still be giving speeches . . . .
In no way does this excuse mistakes made by police no matter who the victims are.
