Editor's note: It is the general policy of Northeast Ohio Media Group not to show images of people being killed. We chose to publish this video because it addresses questions that have been raised about the behavior of the suspect and the police.
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine released a surveillance video Wednesday showing John Crawford III being shot to death by police last month in a Dayton-area Walmart.
DeWine's release of the video and 9-1-1 recording coincided with a Greene County grand jury finding that Beavercreek police were justified in shooting the 22-year-old man, whom they believed was armed with a rifle.
In the footage, Crawford is seen talking on a cell phone and waving what turned out to be an air rifle at the end of a store aisle. Police arrived after a 9-1-1 caller reported that a man was waving around a gun and pointing it at people.

Yup.
Me too.
That's the point. Do we want cops like this roaming the streets. The kid was an idiot, but the caller was a liar and the cops were about what you would expect in Zimbabwe, or North Korea.
“They sell these so-called guns at the Walmart. Thats where he picked it up. It was an air rifle.”
The video is incomplete but from what I saw the cops were waaay too quick on the trigger. But there were also multiple screwups by the victim. Even if he were intending to buy the pellet/toy gun, WHY take it out of the box? Why wave it around like an idiot? That kind of “gun” handling would get you thrown out of most gun stores and ranges. IMO cops need be retrained NOT to assume anyone with a gun is a deadly threat that deserves to die. Instead they seem to shoot based on what they think they can get away with rather than whether there is a real risk.
“If I see someone in a store pointing a weapon (if he truly did) at children yes I drop him.”
Wow, who appointed you judge, jury and executioner? How id that different from a cop shooting someone just because he has a gun? I have had idiots point guns in my direction inadvertantly or through ignorance but I didnt kill them.
Unless he opened the gun earlier. He was not the one who opened the package with the gun. The video shows him picking it off of a shelf in its unwrapped condition. He looks like he is just killing time talking on the phone, and found a distraction. A little childish, but most people view an air rifle as a toy.
He was shot before he “dove” back (at least based on the synced 911 call - we need the ballistics report to see where he was hit. I think the order was he was shot (two shots are very close together)), his first reaction is to flee from the shots, he goes around the corner and sees the other cop in the other aisle. He then moves back away from the threat encountering the first cop who shot him. He then falls down.
Didn’t look at it from that side so you raise an interesting point.
I wish these clowns would off themselves in a garage by themselves.
“Why in the hell are these grand juries allowing these men to keep getting away with murder?! ”
It was not murder.
The idiot was swinging the gun up and down. I do agree that he deserves a Darwin Award for his stupidity.
You are weak.
Of course.
May you receive the same treatment someday.
I live close to where this happens. If the dude was white there would be no outrage.
No charges.
Does that mean that it’s now open season on Open Carriers?
I am quite sure that you would never take a rifle or pellet gun to walmart and swing it up and down while standing still in one of the aisles. This guy was an idiot and the Black grievance industry (e.g. NAACP) will do their best to destroy the life of the cop.
I would've shot the punk too.
Thanks for the internet chicken shit bad ass perspective.
It was a pellet gun and not a toy gun. Pellet guns can fire up to a .22 caliber.
Thanks. I am really disturbed by this case. I remember the Rodney King video and some people said “we didn’t see what happened before the video”. Which was true, but I sided with those who said, “it didn’t matter what went on before, once they had him handcuffed the video shows police misconduct.”
Same situation here. The shooting took place so fast, with such zero precautions against a “false report” or any other situational circumstances, that it seems very clear to me that the cops wanted to kill somebody. That’s what they were there for, to kill somebody. So much more fun than killing a dog! (Although that can be fun too.) They had an opportunity and they took it. Period.
And that scares me.
