On its official website, the Canadian government informs its citizens that there is no limit to the amount of money that you may legally take into or out of the United States. Nonetheless, it adds, banking in the U.S. can be difficult for non-residents, so Canadians shouldnt carry large amounts of cash.
That last bit is excellent advice, but for an entirely different reason than the one Ottawa cites.
Theres a shakedown going on in the U.S., and the perps are in uniform.
...
if youre on an American roadway with a full wallet, in the eyes of thousands of cash-hungry cops youre a rolling ATM.

So far, without the Ebola.
At least, not that much Ebola.
Yet.
That said, I no longer carry much cash on me when I travel international. No need - there are ATM's everywhere.
Our founders would be shocked at this. I’m disgusted and pissed.
Just like Mexico.
The presumption of innocence as well as the 4th Amendment died with the passage of the RICO act.
The feckless fool on the hill has promulgated and exacerbated everything that is wrong with the current state of affairs in our country. I often query my friends asking “name one thing that has gotten better during his presidency?” They cannot name one, but then again I must be talking to the wrong people.
USA. Not worth saving. What, suit up and hump a rifle and pack to protect a free country? Whatever. Officaldom is too powerful. Built by law and order types. Humg from their own gallows.
Yes, we’ve become a kleptocracy. When Colts owner Jim Irsay was busted for driving under the influence, they made a big deal over the fact he had $32,000 in cash in his car. Like it made him a criminal. They guy may be an idiot and it’s stupid to drive around with that much cash on you. But when you’re worth a billion dollars, 32 grand is pocket change. You know the cops were drooling over “confiscating” it.
It sounds like a move to get people to use ATM’s more and credit cards to move us in the direction of a money less country, say a nice number in your arm....
The funny thing is that much of the time, the people abandon the money. They don’t even try to get it back.
Anyone that thinks the police are on the people’s side should read the history about how Adolf rose to power with the aid of police unions.
If I were to move Stateside, I’d probably not carry cash, but transfer from one account to another.
If the money confiscated was your life savings, you might not have the means to put up a fight.
If it was your life savings, you could prove where you got it. It’s not as hard as you think. But most people don’t even try.
If it is less than $20k it will cost you more to get it back than to abandon it. My tagline.
Not really. You show a receipt and you keep the money. Pretty easy really.
Here’s a test: You are walking down the street with $10k in your wallet. Some guy cracks you in the head, takes the money and walks off. Now, whose money is it?
OK...there is a problem with this.
but the numbers don’t line up.
2.5 billion = 2,500,000,000
62,000 seizures
works out to about $40,000 per seizure.
Who goes on walk-about with $40 grand?
Know your rights, refuse the search without a warrant. wait them out, make them charge you with a crime if they have one. Refusal to submit to a search is not a crime.
You are more or less correct. That way NSA can monitor every transaction so that you cannot buy or sell without the mark.
