Vice President Joe Biden "should have been more careful" in a speech when he used a term that some consider anti-Semitic, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League said Tuesday.
"That's one of the things that he finds was most in need when he was over there in Iraq for a year," Biden said, "that people would come to him and talk about what was happening to them at home in terms of foreclosures, in terms of bad loans that were being...I mean these Shylocks who took advantage of, um, these women and men while overseas."

Shylock was a character in one of Shakespear’s plays (The Merchant of Venice). He was a Jewish usurer, so saying that a person is a Shylock means he’s a loan shark.

That's the problem with being a Jew - when the left wants to claim you then you are part of a protected class; when they don't then you are treated like they are all white Southern males at a progressive university.

Shylock was a fictional CHARACTER , who happened to be Jewish, in a DRAMA written hundreds of years ago by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE of England.
This 80 year old Jew absolutely doubts that Joe Biden knows a single thing about the “words” I capitalized.
In fact, I bet that no more than 2% of Americans below the age of 50 know that Shylock was originally a person’s name, and NOT the label given to a “loan shark”. Especially if they went to American schools.
Biden and the other followers of the democrat know, that they can say anything they want about blacks, hispanics and Jews and hispanics, blacks and Jews will still vote democrat, democrat, democrat.

Everything you say is true...but what about equal media treatment. I remember the ‘Macaca’ moment being a huge story, derailing an entire campaign.
And every time Sarah Palin gets a verb tense wrong, some other meaning is extrapolated and pinned on her.
And of course there is the potato.
Yes its an easy mistake to make...and harmless....but why isn’t he dragged over the coals for it, like everybody else? I had never even heard of this story until now.
Given the state of education in general, I doubt that many people could even tell you what Shakespeare is....................

I must be showing my own age (65) for thinking you don’t have to be an English Lit major to have heard of “The Merchant of Venice” and its best known character.
Biden is such a clueless dolt, I’ll bet he also doesn’t know where the expression “a pound of flesh” came from.
If loan sharks are ripping off spouses of deployed military, why didn’t he call them “loan sharks”?

Remember that Dan Rather received mild criticism for using the term "buckwheats" which is an archaic racial slur aimed at blacks. I am proud to say that I am the one who got that ball rolling right here on FR when my part of my post was quoted verbatim by the Rev. Jesse Peterson a few days later in the LA times.

Sad to say, I with for Biden on this one.
If he wants to use “Shylock” to describe banks and business that try to take advantage of service members while they are overseas, I am fine with it.
The ADL needs to get a thicker skin.
