Texas nationalists see hope in possible Scottish secession
My SA ^ | 09/12/14 | Joshua Fechter

"Centralists in America fear that, if Scotland votes yes, it may set a chain of events in motion that could affect many more western regions," the movement organizers wrote. "Suddenly, the impossible seems possible."

With some new attention on Texas nationalism comes repeated arguments for independence: Yahoo columnist Rick Newman notes that — with its GDP of $1.6 trillion and population of 27 million — Texas would be the 13th largest country in the world if it obtained independence from the United States. He also wrote Texas could lure companies away from the United States and survive on the strength of its economy.

I’ve been drawing the line along the Hudson/Lake Champlain. That would get rid of Manhattan, Harlem, and Long Island, but leave upstate NY as American. Get rid of Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Miami, and the Seattle/Portland corridor, and you could probably salvage the rest.

Does writing that only you can decipher make you feel better?

How would we know whether or not your ideas might be really good?

I can’t really disagree with your assesment. I took the easy out and used existing state borders.

Years ago the great futurist Robert Heinlein developed lines that included a pacific coastal entity from down around LA up to and including British Columbia. The inland areas were separate. His new state of chicago was not closely defined but may have included parts of adjacent Wisconsin and Minnesota. I think it extended south to include St Louis.

Perhaps northern NJ might be included with NYC Long Island etc.

Well With a handle like yours, you can come to Tennessee and then go to Texas.

They will accept Tennesseans, the Tennessee Volunteers saved Texas from Mexico, without a passport. They called their university UT taking after the University of Tennessee and even adopted our Big Orange school colors. They screwed up and singed the color swath with an iron the day the committee approved it.

On the contrary, Texas is the one state that CAN go alone. We have our own power grid, a highly diversified economy, and a sizeable population that continues to grow. If Texas were to enter a new union, it would just be supporting other states costs. In my opnion, the best solution for Texas is complete and total independence, we would become the Capitalist Mecca of the world!

We’d lose the US military presence, which would be to big a pill to swallow. Mexico or should I say the drug cartels would officially invade and we’d have to do Texas independence all over again.

I’m play devils advocate here....

If it was put on a ballot, I’d vote for it. But one FReeper had a point. Lots of old Texans that vote wouldn’t want to lose that precious SS or medicare-medicaid.

I’ve heard that Scotland would be like other parts of the British Empire that have become independent: Home rule with the English sovereign being the nominal head of government. Like Canada, Australia, Etc.

I know what I have written, but I asked you if you feel better trying to demean someone and all it took was a yes or no.

No, Scotland is a fully integrated part of the United Kingdom, not a colony or a dependent territory. Citizenship is in common.

A lot of Americans do seem to have this idea, judging from some other posts, that Scotland is this oppressed colony held down by the wicked English. It is complete and utter nonsense. They are better represented in Government than WE are as English people, because they have their own autonomous local Parliament, which we don’t.

The “point” was to give you a hint that your post was difficult to grasp. My hope was a writer could try to get the thought across with easier reader reception. No malice intended, my FRiend.

How you took the critique is what continues.

However, if they were to succeed, then I would imagine one of their first orders of business would be to sweep out all the illegals.

I believe that there are already enough "legal" recent immigrants in Texas that, given the differences in birthrate, it is only a matter of time before they become the majority. Also, an independent Texas would be an incredible magnet to Mexican nationals precisely because of the possibility of righting what many Mexicans consider a great wrong in their history. An independent Texas would almost inevitably become the 32nd Mexican state.

Not necessarily. First, Texas would keep all National and Air National Guard units, since they are the military forces of the State already. Second, Texas would be entitled to a certain amount of military equipment, according to how much we have paid in taxes over x amount of years. Third, a large portion of Texans serve in the US Military, their contracts could either be transferred to a new Texan Military, or they could join Texan Forces once their contracts are up. If Texas has a smaller force, then Texan servicemen could be paid better! Also, Texan independence DOES NOT necessarily mean that the US Military leaves. What if Washington negotiates a status of forces agreement? Under that scenario, Texan Forces share bases with US troops, and life in the base towns go on as normal.

The Drug Cartels don’t have anywhere near the capability to invade and subdue Texas, that’s a pipe dream for them.

The retirees currently on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc... would still be entitled to these programs. To my knowledge, even expats still get SS money, because American citizenship CANNOT be revoked, only renounced! So technically, millions of Texans would still be entitled to keep their US citizenship.

Issues like these are all a matter of negotiation.

Thanks, all good points. As I said, if it went to a vote, I’d be for it.

Five years, BUT that’s on the proviso that the SNP nationalists win the Scottish election, and are able again to pass a referendum bill.

IMO a no vote on Thursday will see a resurgence of support in Scotland for Labour, along with the Tories, UKIP and even the Lib Dems. All pro-union parties. Frankly, if it meant keeping us in the UK union, I’d tactically vote Labour or Lib Dem if I had to.

Whilst I admire your passion, as a an actual Scotsman, and a historian, your history is somewhat romantic and wrong.
