2014 Kansas election: GOP scrambles to save Pat Roberts

The GOP’s political machine is kicking into overdrive to save a Senate seat in Kansas that’s suddenly complicating its path to the majority.

With polls showing Sen. Pat Roberts in serious trouble against independent Greg Orman, top Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, are leaning on big-ticket donors to fill the long-time Kansas senator’s campaign coffers. Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and John McCain of Arizona are planning to barnstorm the state on Roberts’ behalf. And in a bid to boost the senator’s sagging poll numbers, the Roberts campaign is planning an ad blitz to cast his long record and seniority in Washington in a more positive light.

Republicans are also poring over Orman’s record, looking for ways to cast him as a liberal and shady businessman out to enrich himself. Local stories are popping up about a lawsuit against Orman by the boxing equipment manufacturer Everlast and a legal fight the candidate had with legendary actress Debbie Reynolds over a $1 million loan he made to her Hollywood museum.

“We’ve added to the campaign,” Roberts said in an interview this week. “We’re going to be much more aggressive. We’re done with the primary, and we’re getting ready for the general.”

I thought the 78 year old Establishment incumbent would just breeze back into office...that's what we were told.

LOL!

It’s amazing what gets RINOs motivated.

A) Possibly losing to the Tea Party

B) Possibly a RINO losing in the general.

Conservatives should withhold votes from rinos. It’s the only way to defeat the gope.

Hopefully in 6 years he can be replaced with a more conservative candidate but for now I am thankful he is a pro-life and anti-amnesty voice in the senate.

I agree... we need to hold their feet to the fire during primaries but not punch ourselves in the nose in the election. It is possible to drag these politicians more to the right and I firmly believe we are doing just that!!!

Dr. Milton Wolf was Roberts opponent in the Republican Primary. He claimed to be the Tea Party candidate, but lots of people do that and since there is no Tea Party, the claimants are all over the map. Wolf lost that contest and Roberts now stands as the Republican nominee.

He is opposed by Chad Taylor, the Democrat who is trying to quit if the Kansas Supreme Court will let him. He is doing that to try to shift support to Greg Orman, a closet Democrat who is running as an Independent. Orman is a phony, but right now he gets lots of Democrat votes, most of the Indie vote, and a fair number of Republican votes. It’s important to note that these Republicans are not conservatives. Orman has captured the liberal/moderate Republican vote of whom there are plenty in Kansas. The conservatives who voted for Wolf are back in the Roberts camp, mostly reluctantly. What Roberts has to do it to get the whooses back in line.

Remember, this is the state that elected Sebelius twice.

Has Orman indicated who he would caucus with, if elected?

Yes we are, but only until the election. A 78 year old man in his final term will feel no accountability to the people (especially people in a far away state that he won’t visit at all anymore).

He will vote for McConnell and provide a vote for cloture and to keep the gravy train flowing whenever needed.

I did not say it will be happening soon but the die is cast.....if it’s his last term then we have a real shot at replacing him with a more conservative candidate. This will be a long hard slog as Dick Chaney put it but we are making great strides.

And, this scenario will be different if Dingy Harry is once again the Majority Leader of the Senate?

Yes, and there are a whole slew of RINO’S up for reelection in 2016 that will be continually looking over their shoulders as they vote in the next Congress, causing both McConnell and Reid lots of problems as they try thread the needle in getting liberal legislation through the Senate.

Orman has said he will cactus with the majority party; but he is a dem all the way. He donated money to Obama, Reid, and other dem’s . If this is successful you will see the dem’s try this in future races. With the Tea Party and the Elite Republican Establishment at odds it opens the door for this.
The Republicans continue to shoot themselves in the foot. We had a great opportunity to take the Senate now we have this.
With republicans boasting about staying at home and hoping McConnell loses to a dem and others thinking they are going to teach the Republican Party a lesson by not voting and allowing a dem to win is just crazy. I will take a Republican that I agree with 60% of the time any day over a dem or other candidate I disagree with 100% of the time!

Orman is pro-choice, pro-amnesty, pro-background checks and pro-ACA. But too many here they want to see him elected to teach the GOP a lesson. School is one Supreme Court Justice from being out. I never hear the problems anyone has with specific votes of his, just age and residence. If he is out of touch with Kansans tell us the votes where he crosses us.

..if it’s his last term then we have a real shot at replacing him with a more conservative candidate.

The problem is when the next election comes the GOPe still dominates the party and they makes sure another "go along get along guy" is the nominee, then we're told "he it's the best we can do". IOW, nothing changes.

The only path to conservatives taking control of the GOP is to not support those that refuse to represent us. If a candidate is no longer in touch with those he's supposed to represent (owning a home in the state is a start) then they should be sent packing.

If the GOPe thinks they can win big by undercutting conservatives then let them motivate the "moderates" to do the heavy lifting.

I used to belileve this. Every election came around and I contributed to the party, worked at the Pub hdgtrs, worked as an election judge and then following the election watched the Pubs fall into line with their DC establishment "betters". Over the years I became disenchanted and stopped contributing to the GOP and gave contributions to candidates. Then the TEA Party revolution came and I was re-energized. I then watched as the GOPe instead of embracing the movement systematically began marginalizing the TEA Party and it's candidates. If a TEA PARTY candidate won that person was marginalized by the leadership.

The final straw was when the GOPe voted to exempt themselves and their staffs from obamacare, but yet decided it was okay to impose it on me and mine. Now I don't work at the local Pub office and have removed myself from it's membership list. I won't be an election judge. I will only contribute to and vote for a conservative. If a conservative is not on the ballot I won't vote.

I guess the definition of RINO has changed in recent years. Back in the day we referred to them as “Rockefeller Republicans” -—most were from the East Coast and had fairly liberal voting records, Senators like....

Lowell Weicker
Jim Jeffords
Arlen Spector
Lincoln Chaffee
John Chaffee
Jacob Javits
Olympia Snowe
Charles Mathias

ETC....

Sen. Pat Roberts has a lifetime ACU rating of 86.40% making him among the most conservative members of the US Senate.

Have things changed so much in recent years?

No one is perfect, of course. But to throw away a US Senate seat like this is nothing short of sheer insanity IMHO.

I understand your frustration, I have been stuck John McCain forever.... Every primary I vote for the the more conservative candidate running against McCain but McCain wins so on Election Day I begrudgingly vote McCain. I would prefer every Republican office holder be strong conservatives but we deal with the hand we have even if it is weak. I think the conservative movement has made tremendous progress over a relatively short period of time. It sucks to have to vote for a weak Republican but the dem’s are counting on tea party conservatives to stay at home so they can win.

I'm convinced nothing will change until conservatives stop voting for the "lesser of two evils". The moderate Pubs always roll over when the tough votes are needed. What's the point of controlling the Congress if the Pubs have no stomach to fight the evil in the WH, or to take on the media.

Your approach will bring change, guaranteed. Democrats will win more elections, control more of government, and Republicans will once again be the permanent minority party of this country.
