~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Camp Lejeune, North Carolina

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is a 246-square-mile United States military training facility in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The base's 14 miles of beaches make it a major area for amphibious assault training, and its location between two deep-water ports (Wilmington and Morehead City) allows for fast deployments.

The main base is supplemented by five satellite facilities: Marine Corps Air Station New River, Camp Geiger, Stone Bay, Courthouse Bay, Camp Johnson, and the latest addition to the facility, the Greater Sandy Run Training Area.

There are several major Marine Corps commands and one Navy command aboard Camp Lejeune. Some tenant commands include Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, and the naval hospital.

To help prepare warfighters for combat and humanitarian missions abroad, Camp Lejeune takes advantage of 156,000 acres, 11 miles of beach capable of supporting amphibious operations, 34 gun positions, 50 tactical landing zones, three state-of-the-art training facilities for Military Operations in Urban Terrain and 80 live fire ranges to include the Greater Sandy Run Training Area.

The base and surrounding community is home to an active duty, dependent, retiree and civilian employee population of approximately 170,000 people. The base generates almost $3 billion in commerce each year, coming from payrolls and contracts to support the structure required to train and equip our modern Marines.

Camp Lejeune is a six-time recipient of the Commander-in-Chief's Award for Installation Excellence. This award recognizes the base on a Department of Defense level for effectively managing assets and developing quality programs to accomplish the mission of providing expeditionary forces in readiness.

I suppose i could market it as a retrospective of the 60’s.

That decade is very “in” right now.

The 60’s were profoundly affecting to me.

My dad grew up next to to Rose Kennedy, and my Uncle’s in-laws were the staff at the Hyannis compound. So, of course, the events of November 22, 1963 affected me deeply.

Then I got a guitar, and then I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.

And it got crazier from there.

Well, in 15 minutes I'm off to see "Thoroughly Modern Millie" on TCM.

Any lyricist, like Jimmy van Heusen, who can create an adjective like "Sodom-and-Gomorrable" has my undying admiration.

What we think is chic, unique and quite adorable,
They think is odd and Sodom-and-Gomorrable...

My father was stationed there with the 2nd Marine Division from May 1958 to March 1960.

We lived in Jacksonville for much of that time waiting for base quarters. Not positive, but I believe we were not on base much more than 6 months before he was transferred to HQMC.

He hoped we could make a visit to Lejeune before he passed away in 2003, but were only able to visit PI (his last duty station, retired August 1965).

My father was an honorable man, a credit to the Corps. He died a Marine.

Last trip I took was several years ago, before my Dad started going downhill.

If payroll ever settles down I will take some time off. Might be awhile if the last month or so is any indication. d:o)

And today started out bad and got worse as the day went on. We are having a terrible time getting information to get to us correctly.
