BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. Another two bite the dust.
Central New Yorks Fayetteville-Manlius and Baldwinsville school districts are the latest to ditch the National School Lunch Program, which was revamped in 2010 under the guidance of First Lady Michelle Obama in an effort to fight childhood obesity.
Strict limits on calories, fat, sugar, carbohydrates, sodium and other aspects of the school lunch imposed by the federal government on schools participating in the free and reduced lunch program has not only increased cafeteria costs, theyve resulted in a drastic drop in the number of participating students.
At Fayetteville-Manlius, Baldwinsville, and thousands of other districts the new regulations resulted in a sharp downturn in students who eat school lunch and a sharp increase in food waste. The lost sales are threatening the viability of cafeteria programs in schools across the country, prompting many to do without federal subsidies to serve students food theyll actually buy and eat.
Grilled cheese and tomato soup was a very popular lunch, Baldwinsville Superintendent David Hamilton told WRVO public media. We couldnt offer that under the new guidelines of the federal government. Spaghetti and meatballs, we couldnt offer that either.
As a result of last years school lunch menu high school lunch sales in Baldwinsville plummeted from about 600 to 430 students per day.
...snip...
Meanwhile, lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives are considering legislation to provide exemptions from the lunch regulations for schools that are losing substantial revenue, though Michelle Obama has vowed to fight for her pet project until the bitter end.
President Obama has also promised to veto the legislation if it makes it to his desk, the Associated Press reports.

The folks in the nanny state just don't get it. Their main problem is that we've had too much freedom for too long and they'll never be able to change that. But, they keep trying :)
Get the Feds and the USDA out of the government indoctrination centers lunch program.
Hey, U.S. House of Representatives: We don't need exemptions, we need complete repeal. Just like nobamacare.
Michelle O. didn’t care to get the input from the students, the schools when she implemented her plan. So like a Marxist, edicts from the top with no concern how those impacted suffer from that edict.
I’m in F-M school district. This is the first I’ve heard of it. The school district’s not exactly shouting it from the rooftops.
Baldwinsville is pretty conservative. It’s about 20 miles west of me.
So Michelle “Vows to fight for her PET PROJECT till the ‘bitter end’”. I actually believe she said that line, not thinking or not giving a damn on how self centered it sounds. She wants ‘a big win’ at whatever costs necessary. Poorly nourished schoolkids or lunch menus stripped of all flavor and visual appeal? Those are but a few of the collateral damages one must accept on the road to victory and self-glorification!
It would be interesting what you could find out and report back to us.
This is great!
Enrolled my two teen agers in high school recently. Interesting thing I learned about their school lunch program, Unlike middle school, there are several different lunch lines, one line is the basic lunch that costs $2.00 for the payers and free loaders alike, other lines for optional food items such as pizza, burgers etc. (the good stuff).
Kids who have the “free” lunch pass are not allowed to use their pass to “buy” items from those lines, even if they have cash to pay with. Kids who have a balance on their cards that parents have paid hard cash for, may purchase as much as they want from among the “extra” items.
I love it but am wondering how long it will be before some lib starts hollering discrimination.
We live in a very conservative area. In a high school population of about 3,000 there are probably fewer than a dozen “minority” kids.
I keep asking....What is wrong with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or a cheese sandwich or a salmi sandwich...and an apple or cookie.????????
we all survived and didn’t have this obesity problem/.
Tomorrow's lunch menu for middle school/upper school students at the Sidwell Friends School:
Sweet Corn Chowder
Lentil, Beet & Orange Salad
Blackened Portobello Salad
All Natural Meatball Subs
Margherita Orzo
Farmer's Market Vegetable
Baked Potato Wedges
Grapes
I went to Baldwinsville schools, but that was over 50 years ago. Living in the Peoples Republic of Connecticut these days. Glad to hear they haven’t gone over to the dark side.
I forgot to mention my mother was a cafeteria lady there.
So, can someone tell me what this means in terms of the "disadvantaged" kids? Every time we hear of a school district deep-sixing the new guidelines, it's because participation drops dramatically. Does this mean that even the kids who normally would have a free or subsidized lunch suddenly discover they actually can make a better lunch at home? Because if that's the case, then I say this has been a GREAT program!
Time to ditch Michele. I’ll replace her with a Five Guys Hamburger and fries, any day, anytime, and with ketchup too.
The MOOSE has a HUGE CABOOSE!!!! WHo the HELL is she to tell someone else what to eat!!!!!]
True Confessions; My Mom put white Wonder Bread in our sandwiches for years, and we all loved it. There used to be a Wonder Bread bakery downtown Grand River, near my High School (Cass Tech) in Detroit. Hostess had a small bakery nearby that made chocolate Ding Dongs and those big White Snowballs! This was just a few blocks west of a shop that ground up Eight O Clock Coffee Beans. Morning bus rides never smelled so good as back then.
His wife did the same thing with 0bamacare.
That looks like some good eating!
Better if butter, salt, ketchup, hot sauce are allowed!
My mother was German..she once sent me to school with a Liederkranz sandwich...a cheese more smelly than Limburger.HA!
We kept our lunches in the ‘cloakroom “ where we kids kept our jackets and coats.
I never took that kind of sandwich ever again!
No therapy for trauma either..ha.
“I love it but am wondering how long it will be before some lib starts hollering discrimination.”
That’s what I was basically thinking—although not just on the alternative food choice plan this school has. Wait for somebody like Sheila Jackson Lee to claim that these so-called “healthy” lunch menus are really discriminating against minorities who eat different food as a matter of their culture. (The only thing stopping it so far is the fact that the Mooch created this thing. But I’m sure the left can work out a weird argument that it’s not her fault.)
