The .22 Ammo Shortage Mystery -- Solved!
Motley Fool ^ | August 31, 2014 | Rich Smith

Posted on 08/31/2014 9:34:25 AM PDT by lbryce

Earlier this year, CBS News spotlighted a growing shortage of .22-caliber ammunition. "One of the most popular and common" -- and cheapest -- calibers of ammo for hunters and target shooters alike, CBS reports that .22 shells are in short supply these days. Interviewing one supplier, CBS reported that while as recently as two years ago it was still possible to buy .22-caliber ammunition "by the pallet-load... now they're putting restrictions on how much you can get and how you get that ammo."

Retailers are shooting blanks This is a problem from ammunition retailers -- and for gun owners as well. Statistically speaking, 24%-45% of Americans own guns either for self-defense or sporting purposes. But getting the ammo to load into those guns is becoming a bit of a trick.

I haven’t been able to find it in North Mississippi or around Memphis since election day 2012. On a recent roadtrip through rural West TN and KY I checked every Wal-Mart, pawn shop, and gunshop I passed and didn’t find a single round. The Wal-Mart in Union City, TN, had a cardboard sign on their ammo case notifying customers that no .22 had come in overnight.

Well, yeah, that’s obviously “the solution”, but it wasn’t in the referenced article.

You’re more likely to find krugerrands in a Cracker Jack box then 22 ammo at Wal-Mart

Recently scored 4000 rounds of lead heads (Federal) at $.04 per round. It’s out there but a difficult find.

Marlin 795. Federals, almost flawless.

The Remington fed and ejected so poorly that I had to use an entire brick in my revolver just to get rid of them.

These are fun, to bad you can't find them anymore.
They work in all my Ruger semi autos but not in my Marlin 60.

A friend just returned from Canada and said there are piles of 22 in the stores at almost the old prices.

Are they covered by a layer of dust?

I stocked up on a few of these in the mid-90s when they were $9.99 a brick at Wally World.

I had several 5000rnd cases purchased over the years when I found bargains at Sportsman’s Guide. Unfortunately a boating accident carried them away. Except for that Russian Vostok, the best thing you can say about it is that the duds give you excellent trigger training. $109 a case delivered, so it’s hard to complain.

Obama is buying up all the ammo, to deny the population at large any ammunition they’ll need for survival, to hoard it for his own insidious plans.

The 10/22 handles the Golden Bullets pretty well, but I’d say about 1 in 20 is a jammer, they’re not very accurate and dirty as well.

Yeah, I even went so far as to return ship a bulk brick back to them because it was so bad. Returned the other brick to Walmart. About 1/3 of the rounds would misfire in a S&W K22 revolver.

Go to walmart twice a week. Head to the ammo cage first. Nope, no ammo. Except for about a month ago. 3 boxes of 50, federal locked up behind glass. The associate was just unlocking it for another costumer. He took the 3 boxes. Got any more? I asked. He hands me 3 he had under the counter, then put 3 more in the case for the next guy who comes along. All he would sell me is three. I am sure that case was gone soon. Cheap, $3.50 or so a box too.

It is hard to explain why DHS is snapping up .22 ammo

I bought a case of 22LR and some 22 mag when some department store here went out of business many moons ago.

Gun shows are the worst. If you want to get screwed, go to a gun show. I overheard a vendor lying through his teeth about a used Ruger 10/22. It was a factory rifle with a wood stock light handling marks. He was attempting to sell it for $390. I put on my bimbo blonde game face and walked over twirling my hair. After having a bit of fun, I asked why would I buy a used on e for $390 when you can get a brand new one for way under $300? The potential buyer walked and the vendor called me a bitch and asked me what my problem was. After a short conversation he said he only had to sell it once.

I am not apposed to aggressively selling at a ridiculously high price. I am also not opposed to to let someone know they are being ripped off.

These gun shows were great years ago. They are no longer worth it. The only deal to be had is the guy walking around trying to sell his dead fathers hunting rifle he inherited.

I bought a Sendero 30-06 with 100 rounds of ammo for $500. Needless to say I didn’t try to haggle.

:)
