PERSEVERANCE

The idea of perseverance is an important component in athletics, the military, studies, and even in religion. Perseverance is the master key, the secret of success when you are in the middle of the struggle. It is that extra, the second air, the capacity to overcome the discouragement.

Our society is making a lot of progress. We have technology and facilities that no one in history ever had before. The new generations can grow up today more healthy, and live longer. But we do have an Achilles' heel: the absence of the spirit of perseverance. A young man enthusiastically joined the military yesterday...he wants to resign today. A student goes to college with a lot of promises to herself; three months down the road, she withdraws from those studies. A couple got married today; a year later they file for divorce.

The problem, as I see it, is that while we are helping the younger generation grow up, we are overprotecting them and making the journey too easy. We are not teaching them the important sense of perseverance, that attitude of sacrifice and consistency that every successful person has to maintain to reach their goals.

The scriptures cover the importance of perseverance. It was Jesus who said, "Because of the increase of our wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved" (Matthew 24:12-13). We receive hope and courage through these words. It may be hard, but to love when others hate, make peace and justice when others cause fights and unhappiness, build when others destroy, is "standing firm".

In every task, where we practice consistency and perseverance, we will see the good fruit of our sacrifice. And at the end of the final chapter of the book of our life, we will fully understand what Jesus meant through his words, "But he who stands firm to the end will be saved".

A Blessed Lord's Day to you, ML.

Here's the note from the website where I found the transcription:

"Simeon’s song sung – in a Kiev melody – by solo tenor: nonetheless this motet ends with the lowest note in the Rachmaninoff Vespers : a B flat below low C."

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Yep...that was a Bb alrighty! LOL!

I can get down to the low c but Bb is too low for me! (I was a dramatic coloratura, but over the years I seem to have become more of a contralto, but I can still vocalize up to the high c.)

The solo tenor sounds so characteristic of the Russian Tenors...so different from the sweet Bel Canto Type Tenor we associate with Italian or Irish tenors.

The Russian tenor seems to have a slightly strained or strident sound to it, I think due to Asian Influence. .

I have no idea if there is an “official” opinion on this, but it has been my experience.

There are probably a lot of “Sweet” Russian Tenors, but most of them that I have heard, especially in folk and liturgical music, sound just like the one on this recording.

It gives the music an “edge”.

Lynn-Dah and I several walks today, in between lessons and rehearsals.

The neighborhood kids are all a little afraid of her until properly introduced, and then they love her. Although she looks like a Lab, her fur is extremely soft because of her Chow Chow ancestry. And since she is black, her fur becomes very warm when we walk in the sun together. Once the children realize she LIKES to be petted, they can’t get enough of her.

And she LOVES the attention! LOL!

"I VOW TO THEE, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."
