With a prominent grocery workers union back in support, the California Assembly voted on Thursday to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.
Just days after the measure could not muster the 41 votes needing to pass, falling short at 38, it passed on a 44-29 vote. Seven Democrats who withheld votes on the previous attempt pivoted to vote aye.
Lawmakers turned back Senate Bill 270 on Monday as the United Food and Commercial Workers Union withdrew crucial labor backing for the sweeping prohibition. Central to the unions reversal was a provision allowing grocery stores to offer paper or reusable bags for a minimum 10-cent fee.

they refer to these as single use. Of course many people use them a few imps for various reasons.
We have various nice pieces of luggage, but I use double bags for carry on books, papers, etc. My wife can’t stand it.
I guess we’ll all be using energy to wash the germs out of those reusable canvas bags every week.
Idiots!
No such thing as a “single use” plastic bag in my home. They are re-used for a variety of purposes. All of them. If I lived in CA /spit, I’d have to buy more plastic bags. Idiots.
/Thank God I no longer live in the People’s Republic of California!
That's ok. I buy them by the thousands and I'm not in Austin frequently anyway. I make sure that when I am there, I take my own plastic bags and make a show of using them.

Most things in a store come in cardboard boxes which can be used to carry things home. Boxes are nicer than plastic bags, and they can be used again when it’s time to pack up and move out of California.
If these idiots were so worried about plastic bags doing environmental damage then why didn’t they pass a proposed law requiring all open hauling trucks to have covers? They killed that piece of legislation.
And if they were really worried about plastic despoiling California why don’t they get all the welfare recipients off their arses and down to their local dumps to sort all of the recyclables out of the trash? There is no reason why any plastic, paper, or glass should end up in a landfill in America when we have this many loafers in our midst. Sort garbage or no check!
I prefer the plastic bags. Easy to carry. Also reuse them.
California is stuck on stupid and deserves what it gets. Sorry for the Conservatives who must live there.
but the RATS love the environment, feh...
Dumb. My folks taught me to save the plastic bags and use them for a variety of purposes. Small trash bin linings, packing material, litter box cleanings and shocking as it might seem to California’s legislature: to carry in them things other than the items I purchased when I first got them. Wotta concept, huh?
What will the Bag Ladies, err, Street People, err Homeless do?
If and when I think of it, I ask for paper bags. Kills more trees, soaks up bacon grease, and hides my ugly head throughout the week.
I wonder how much the dog poop bag makers contributed to these worthless sacks of skin in the legislature...
i use mine as garbage bags afterwards, liners for smaller cans.
We remember what horrible people we were when the liberals put in the plastic bags law in attempt to save the forests, and were so horrified when we demanded paper bags at the grocer store, and still do. “Save the trees they screamed” in unison. “Keep the filthy loggers out of our forests” they demanded. “YOU are killing all the trees” they told us.
Today the libs are passing laws to eliminate their plastic bag laws.
“Single use” my eye. When I could still get them here in San Jose I used to use them to line the wastebaskets in the kitchen and bathroom.
Keep in the forefront of your mind ... arguing with a Progressive is like arguing with a fence post.
Does anyone remember when the enviros were screaming for everyone to use plastic bags to save trees and how that was going to save the world?
There is an interesting story about giving Tesla a pass on conforming to environmental regs for their battery factory.

Funny how they scream for equality and exercise special privilege.
