They knew he had children, and they knew that in West Africa, families and even neighbors eat off the same plate and bathe and care for sick people. They explained to the man how important it was to stop Ebola, and that his friends and family would be treated with respect.
Their pleas didn't work.
Mirkovic saw this scene play out over and over again. One of her colleagues at the CDC who's worked in Liberia says preliminary data shows they could be missing 40 to 60% of the contacts of known Ebola patients.
"This is one of the hardest parts of the response," said Dr. Brett Petersen, a medical officer with the CDC.
Mirkovic agrees. She says she understands why Ebola patients don't want to name names: There was a rumor going around the communities she worked in that getting on a contact list meant you would die -- and the deaths would happen in the same order as they appeared on the list.
"I understand they're scared," she said.

My motivation to help these lovely nations responsble for the worlds worst diseases falls like a blind roofer.......
These are tribal people that still believe in sympathetic magic. So, if you do something to their image or name (like a voodoo doll), they think things will happen to them.

I get it. I just don’t think it’s worth it. But that’s the black heart in me speaking.... Funny we’re talking about this given your moniker. :)
Darwin would be very proud of these people.
Wasn't this the total like a couple weeks ago?
Here’s the latest WHO report.
http://www.who.int/csr/don/2014_08_22_ebola/en/
“Between 19 and 20 August 2014, a total of 142 new cases of Ebola virus disease (laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspect cases) as well as 77 deaths were reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.”
Remember: No culture is superior, and no culture is inferior.
Unless, of course, some cultures are actually inferior.
Multi-Culturalism is a crime against humanity.
There should already have been an update but it has lagged for some mysterious reason. Perhaps there is such an institutional breakdown in West Africa that the stats are now almost impossible to obtain. I mean how do you now count the Ebola stats in the West Point slum of Monrovia since it has been sealed off from the outside?
See my post #10. The WHO Ebola outbreak report is already a couple of days overdue. If we don’t see a report by Thursday then you know something is up...namely a complete institutional breakdown.
These are the same geniuses who a couple of years ago were convinced a text message could make your Willie vanish...
Good question about WP.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Do you know what a week more at those rates produces?
And those are the figures that WHO says are "vastly underestimated".
Thanks for the ping!
Are Pelosi and Reid keeping the lists and managing these death panels, too? Sounds suspiciously like ObolaCare to me.
You’re Welcome, Alamo-Girl!
There should be another huge spike any day from those who ransacked that clinic and took the bloody sheets. And you just know they’ll pass it on to their family and neighbors.
