Confusion about what constitutes halal meat sparked a blunder at a community barbecue in Fairview on Saturday.
After failing to provide halal meat, event organizers tried to remedy the oversight by having a local politician bless regular hotdogs.
Patricia Arab, Liberal MLA for Fairview-Clayton Park, said a prayer over the hotdogs, mistakenly thinking this would make the meat halal.
Meat that is halal, which means “permissible” in Arabic, is prepared following precise instructions detailed in the Qur’an.
A halal animal must be healthy and fed a natural diet that does not contain animal byproducts. When it’s slaughtered, it is blessed and the blood must be drained from the body.
Ibrahim Alshanti, the imam of United Muslims of Halifax, said he appreciates that the event organizers tried to accommodate Muslims.
But he said in the end, they made the situation worse. “They should have just said that halal meat was not available and people would have understood,” Alshanti said in an interview Monday.
“But having someone say a prayer over regular hotdogs made the situation worse because it’s like making a joke of the issue. I think it would be nice if (Arab) could apologize.”
The MLA was not available for comment Monday.

Either way, they sully ALL food just by eating it, then regurgitating all the base opinions they have of everybody else.

Suicidal stupidity is right. And worse, many are totally oblivious to the fact their stupidity puts us in harm’s way as well.
My thoughts too. It’s much better to come here though and force ‘uneducated’ meat packing firms to provide Halal meat rather than just getting it in the Middle East where you used to live.
My advice to Ms. Arab: At future events simply state that halal meat will not be available.
I am of the opinion that a warning label should be applied to any halal meat as it has been sacrificed to other gods and as a Christian, I am taught to not eat such things.

The thought of serving halal hot dogs makes this story all the more entertaining.
