Erin Klein said a manager at the Ram Restaurant in Happy Valley asked her to cover up as she nursed her 11-month-old, because other customers had apparently complained....

Get a life.

Look, I really don't care if a mom breastfeeds her child....but making a spectacle about it is STUPID.

American women have NO modesty. In the third world, where everything is different and there are no facilities which accommodate this, of course they still do this in public.

It is NOT necessary here, and people who do it are just using their child to get attention! Not wholesome.

It may be about getting attention or it may be about the complete dismissal of manners and decorum in our society in general.

20 years ago, they played this exact scene on "Married With Children."

Marcy: Breast-feeding is a normal, biological function.

Al: So is peeing, but you don't see me doing it.

Good heavens woman! Nobody wants to see your bare breasts,is that why you insist on flopping them out in public?

I don’t understand what is so onerous about covering while nursing.

This is modern America.

This is also the era of selfies, posting videos of people doing dumb things on U-Tube, facebook, reality shows....

We are a society that craves attention

There are plenty of nursing mothers in our church. At our social events, they are VERY good at nursing without being noticeable. All parties involved no where everything is, and the target is not hard to find.

Too broad a statement - there are times when it is totally appropriate, but the woman should have the sense to use a little bit of discretion by minimizing the display. Breast feeding is best for most children and we ca't expect Moms to have their every action planned out so it never occurs in public. When done properly, it can actually help instill a sense of modesty in youngsters who observe it. Not every action which bares a part of a woman is an immodest/immoral/depraved action and we do no favors by trying to pretend that nature is not what it is. You can't teach a person responsible respect for sexuality by putting up an impenetrable shield.

Right. MY mother raised two of us with NEVER a need for doing this kind of thing in a public place.

If it’s a problem, maybe mom ought to stay home with her child until it ISN’T a problem.

Of course, mothers now days wouldn’t DREAM of staying home to care for their children... they’re all over the place... I have even seen young moms out shopping with what look to be newborns babies... What ? You can’t stay home even a couple weeks?

There is nothing “unwholesome” about breast feeding a baby and I have no problem with nursing in public. But I do think that women need to be discrete about it. I note the restaurant manager didn’t ask her to stop breastfeeding but only to “cover up” and I don’t think that is an unreasonable request. There are light weight blankets, cover-ups that can and should be used in such situations.

There is no excuse for whipping out her boob(s) in public for all to see.

There was a picture of the offended cow at the WP site. Believe me...the original FR poster of this thread did you a favor by NOT displaying that pic.

You know you bring up an interesting point. In communities, let’s say like the Amish, nursing a baby is part of the culture. Most likely, however, you would never see an Amish woman nursing her baby in a restaurant though. But in our world, nursing is not necessarily the general rule. There are still plenty of women who bottle feed their babies. So, it always seemed to me to not be so much a standard practice, but a statement of some kind. Because of this I , too, get the feeling there is a lot of attention seeking going on.
