The National Guard rolled in to protect a status quo. But racism set a status quo of inequality long before Michael Brown died.
The National Guard will essentially protect the legal looting of black people – much as it was protected when Missouri became the last slave state admitted to the union.
The symptoms of structural racism stain America everywhere, but its execution is particularly perverse in places like Ferguson. It’s not just that black drivers are stopped more often for alleged crimes than white drivers, despite the Missouri attorney general’s report that white people break the law more often. It’s not that Ferguson’s police force is 94% white in a town that’s two-thirds black. It’s not even, as Jeff Smith wrote in Monday’s New York Times, that black people–many unemployed– “do more to fund local government than relatively affluent whites” by way of those stops and the subsequent fines.
The real perversion of justice by way of modern American racism is that black people in Ferguson – like black people in the greater St Louis metropolitan area and nationally–are marginalized economically and physically from day one. That is the real looting of Ferguson.
We are consistently twice as likely to be unemployed – and in and near St Louis, “47 percent of the metro area’s African-American men between ages 16 and 24 are unemployed”. Our men are more likely to be convicted and our women are more likely to be evicted. We are more likely to be victims of predatory loans. Our children are twice as likely to have asthma (even before you teargas them). Our babies are twice as likely to die before the age of one–and their mothers are three or four times more likely to die as a result of bearing them....

I’d really like to know what he means by this. Does he mean there are more white people, so of course there are more white lawbreakers? Does it refer specifically to traffic laws?
The statistical truth, that blacks (or black men at least, but men in general are so vastly more criminal than women in genral I’m not sure it matters) commit crime in great disproportion to their population level, cannot be refuted.
It can be ignored, it can be obsfucated (which I take it is the attempt here by the MO AG), but it is a truth which all people, black, white and otherwise, know perfectly well.
I had a wild thought the other day, and it sounded awful when I expressed it at work, but I think it’s true.....
Though slavery was so wrong and the treatment of blacks was terrible, it did actually give birth to them becoming citizens of the United States. Would they all rather be living in Africa today? Starvation, disease, no hope for anything in life other than an early and miserable death? Why not be grateful that your ancestor’s suffering caused you to live in a free nation, and rise up and take advantage of that, as many have.
I liken it to Israel, in a way. The holocaust was diabolical beyond compare. It did, however, give birth to the nation of Israel. Those people never forget the suffering of their families, and are grateful and thankful for their nation, and it shows. They moved forward, not whining, but building and improving.

Where do you begin? Absentee fathers lead to poverty-level childhoods, poor education outcomes lead to poor employment prospects lead to poor credit ratings lead to predatory lending. Whose fault is this?
All these idjits want to feel empowered, but for the wrong reasons and in the wrong ways. They never consider that taking care of one’s business in a mature, responsible, moral way might be the better avenue to success and a sense of self-accomplishment. To paraphrase an old Reagan comment about scariest words, “We’re from the government and we’re here to help you - you’re screwed!”
Read Booker T Washington; ignore W.E.B. DuBois; ignore Cornell West...read Williams and Sowell...hopefully the young crowd will replace those who are in the “educated cliques where the mantra is, nothing has changed”.

A sizable portion of the black population has worked and succeeded at solid productive citizenship. A similarly sized portion of the same population is unable and unwilling to make the same transition.

Pull the police and national Guard out, establish a perimeter around Ferguson, and let them run their city the way they see fit. Hopefully, there will be lots of video feeds and popcorn.

That assertion is complete nonsense, more than half of all homicides in the United States are committed by black males -- who make up a small fraction of the US population.

And why do you suppose that is? Instead of playing the victim card...again...ask yourself what blacks have done on their own to bootstrap their lives. What we're seeing in Ferguson is clearly going to help lower unemployment rates there, right? Almost $2 trillion since the War on Poverty began and the GAO reported last year that poverty is worse now than ever. Lesson: Throwing money at their problem isn't going to change anything until they get the friggin' chip off their shoulder, quit playing the victim card, and show some self-discipline and initiative on solving their problem themselves, perhaps starting with lowering a 72% illegitimacy rate. All that money and what does society get in return: Ferguson, MO.
