The Justice Departments chief peacekeeper is on his way to embattled Ferguson, Mo.
Usually, Grande H. Lum flies under the radar. As head of the departments Community Relations Service, the Harvard Law School graduate is an experienced mediator, more diplomat than prosecutor. The agency he heads was established under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, with the stated mission to aid communities in resolving disputes, disagreements, or difficulties relating to discriminatory practices based on race, color, or national origin which impair the rights of persons in such communities.
These officials will continue to convene stakeholders whose cooperation is critical to keeping the peace, Attorney General Eric Holder said.
Its a small agency, with an annual budget of about $12 million. As the agency notes in its most recent annual report, its mediators have been involved in some of the hottest disputes in the nations history, from the Civil Rights movement to the 2012 Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida.
In 2012, the agency completed 728 cases. Tensions over hate incidents or crimes accounted for many of the cases; a total of 67 dealt with police-community relations.

Ummmm. Let’s don’t forget Jesse and Fat Al S.
Peacekeeping unit = “Unrest fomenting unit.”
These officials will continue to convene stakeholders whose cooperation is critical to keeping the peace, Attorney General Eric Holder said.
I’ve noticed this administration using that term
“stakeholders” quite a lot lately, must be in the
play book.
You must be under 50 then.....it’s an OLD saying.
I HEARD the guy say that they are from the Nation of Islam!!! ANd they were going to keep the peace and go checking on people in the hood to see if they were OK. Is Black Panthers and Nation of Islam the SAME??
Unfortunately, they are not going anywhere until Tom Jackson either resigns or is terminated, Robert McCulloch recuses himself, and Darren Wilson is put in jail pending his trial.
The effort will be made from the coffee shop of the Holiday Inn. There will be no presence on the street. The effort will involve the guys from DC, the big hat ladies from several churches, a preacher or two and kappy young lawyerette.
There will be no appearance on the street or confrontations with the lawless. Remember, in Furgeson “this is not us, We are not like this” was the initial reporting. Credit must be taken for the already in process winding down.
LOL! That would go over like a lead balloon in the black community. One thing I learned about black cons while working in the prison system is that they hated homos...black homos especially. Not that they didn't use their services, but no male convict was ever going to admit to it.
I don’t believe so.
I also think those comments were undoubtedly for public consumption.
They want it to sound like they’re just a peaceful organization. I don’t believe that at all.
Those groups don’t swoop in for gratis. They are seeking to garner support.
I wish :)
So his one job is to keep the peace...why did it take so long for him to go to Ferguson?
