If you thought last winter was bad, get ready for a potentially worse winter in parts of the country this year. But another record-setting winter could mean more than higher heating bills and snow fights.
Harsh winter weather combined with coal-fired power plant closings could spell trouble for many households across the country who will desperately need to keep the lights and heat on this winter.
Joe Bastardi, chief meteorologist at WeatherBELL Analytics, told the Wall Street Journal Live that current weather patterns are flowing along right now into the type of El Niño situation that is notorious for giving the United States cold, snowy winters, especially in the southern and eastern part of the United States, relative to the averages.
Temperatures last winter set new record lows for huge swaths of the U.S. The stretch from December 2013 to February 2014 was the 34th coldest such period for the contiguous 48 states as a whole since modern records began in 1895, reports the Weather Channel.
But the harsh winter did more than just chill the air, it sent demand for heat and power surging and brought the electrical grid to near its breaking point. Natural gas power plants lacked the supplies and infrastructure to keep the lights on and green energy was unable to generate power in fierce winter weather.
Bastardi noted that another harsh winter would be significant because we were within one power plant last year of having the grid overload....

Damn you, Algore! Why did you have to single-handedly stop global warming?
Ping?
Damn! I think a piece of the sky just hit me in the head!
Well, read the article and that good news!!!
Awesome snowboarding season!
Yippee!
Most of us can sit in our homes, and eat the food we have prepped!
All the liberals in the cities can be lucky to live through it, when a major disaster does happen. They will get to see that the real world ain’t what they were taught. All those evil guns, preppers and bitter clingers will be their salvation.
Maybe an event like this (a month or so without food, power, clean water) will wake them up.
What we need is some good ol’ Global Warming!
I call BS. Remember after Katrina and Rita, forecasters were openly stating that we could expect endless Cat 5 summers from now on. I think even AlGore used this premise in his movie.
Thanks Jackson Browne and your “No Nukes” BS.
I work with the power industry and we did come very, very close to rolling brownouts during the worst weather.
Obama’s (liberal)policies will never change, but a few hundred citizens freezing to death may spur some changes.
There would have been fewer concerns had the environmentalists not opposed new pipelines and new combined-cycle power plants proposed in the Northeast that would replace lost coal power and would help stabilize the grid.
The SAD THING (or maybe pathetic thing) is that Republicans, most likely, will not even attempt to link the electricity shortage to Obama Administration policies - most of which are illegal without approval from Congress. Instead, at best, they may promise to “fix it”.
And why not, because their CONSULTANTS (most of them gay, by the way) CONTINUE to tell them that ANY criticism of the president will be received as racist - and those officeholders CONTINUE to trust and believe them.
In a sane world, this situation would prompt investment in more energy supplies — if it weren’t illegal thx to the Rats.
“There would have been fewer concerns had the environmentalists not opposed new pipelines and new combined-cycle power plants proposed in the Northeast that would replace lost coal power and would help stabilize the grid.”........
Nothing will resolve this UNTIL the liberals themselves are affected. Then and only then will the “talks” begin as to why this happened and what can be done about it”. Then they can all say, “Global Warming isn’t what it used to be”.
First, liberals never take responsibility for their actions.
Second, freezing deaths would merit an "investigation" into power companies and their greed, not into EPA policies.
You know exactly how this will be spun by the liberals and media.
Funny.
I was getting some stuff out of storage the other day and got hungry. So I oppened a can of tuna and three bean salad.
Didn’t have to waste time going to a restaurant.
Nice little fantasy but it will not play out like that.
Let's see now...
34th coldest out of the last - what? - 119 years? Put like that, it doesn't seem so remarkable, now does it?
Joe Bastardi says that in the Deep South snow will be 133% to 167% above normal.
