Autopsy Shows Michael Brown Was Struck at Least 6 Times (all in front)
The New York Times ^ | Sunday, August 17, 2014 | Frances Robles and Julie Bosman

Posted on 08/17/2014 8:20:29 PM PDT by kristinn

Michael Brown, the unarmed black teenager who was killed by a police officer, sparking protests around the nation, was shot at least six times, including twice in the head, a preliminary private autopsy performed on Sunday found.

One of the bullets entered the top of Mr. Brown’s skull, suggesting his head was bent forward when it struck him and caused a fatal injury, according to Dr. Michael M. Baden, the former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, who flew to Missouri on Sunday at the family’s request to conduct the separate autopsy. It was likely the last of bullets to hit him, he said.

Mr. Brown, 18, was also shot four times in the right arm, he said, adding that all the bullets were fired into his front.

The bullets did not appear to have been shot from very close range because no gunpowder was present on his body. However, that determination could change if it turns out that there is gunshot residue on Mr. Brown’s clothing, to which Dr. Baden did not have access.

SNIP

Dr. Baden provided a diagram of the entry wounds, and noted that the six shots produced numerous wounds. Some of the bullets entered and exited several times, including one that left at least five different wounds.

“This one here looks like his head was bent downward,” he said, indicating the wound at the very top of Mr. Brown’s head. “It can be because he’s giving up, or because he’s charging forward at the officer.”

He stressed that his information does not assign blame or justify the shooting.

“We need more information; for example, the police should be examining the automobile to see if there is gunshot residue in the police car,”...

I’ve seen that video. Sounded like the battle of the bulge. amazing nobody got hurt. A lot of nearby cars and houses probably took damage.

According to the police there was a struggle for the officer's gun in the vehicle when that shot was fired. According to the officer's friend Brown had gained partial control of the weapon and fired a shot narrowly missing Wilson before he regained his weapon.

Everything fits his story.

The palm shot is evidence of running, imo.

It’s a grazing wound from the hand being nearly parallel to the line of fire.

Imagine Brown’s right hand, while running, in the “I want to shake your hand” position.

The cop suffered head injury. It has been said his face was at the very least swollen. Eventually it will all come out.

The bullets sometimes bounce off of the bones and ricochet through some other part of the body.

Also, people are talking about aiming. They don’t seem to realize how fast this all happens. Average police are not sharpshooters and, like anybody else, are trained to aim for the body mass where they are most likely to hit. They don’t shoot at individual body parts, and even these head shots were probably because the officer was aiming for the body mass and Brown put his head down and was charging him.

According to the report:

One shot in the hand

One shot in the forearm

One shot slightly north of the elbow

One shot in the upper forearm that went into the chest

One shot that went into the eye, out through the jaw, and back into the collarbone

One shot in the top of the head

So the last two shots were consistent with a charging suspect.

All in the front.
Amazing how that works out.

“So the last two shots were consistent with a charging suspect.”

Or a falling one. I don’t care how big you are, getting shot hurts - as several here can witness from personal experience. You suddenly grey out and collapse.

I think the last shot, at least, (and maybe the second to last) was a complete accident. The bullet was fired just as he started to collapse. The officer was obviously firing rapidly - the entry wounds show the classic “walking up” pattern - and probably didn’t have chance to stop as Brown started to fall.

As to the tox report - if it comes back clear I won’t be totally surprised. People do some amazing - and amazingly stupid - things when the old adrenaline kicks in. Brown already was on an adrenaline high for the robbery, then the preliminary tussle with the officer. It’s called the fight or flight hormone for a reason. Brown chose fight. He lost.

Old enough to vote you’re an adult.

Agree. This media crap of referring to minorities involved in criminal activity as “teens” is garbage, when they are 18 or 19 y/o.

If they prefer to refer to them as “children or teens”, then change the law back to permit voting only at age 21, except for younger people serving in the military.

Hmmm. Seems like the Laws of Physics were suspended for a bit. Or am I missing something obvious?

Yes! you're missing something. Add that Brown weighed 292 pounds at 6'4", that standard autopsy body diagram is a much smaller man. Add several inches for 100 lbs of excess fat on the body. The Brown body is wider and heftier. Running is not like a sprint, either.

Now when he charges toward the police officer, think running In a hunched over position with one arm in front, turned a bit toward the officer. Bullets hit the arm acting somewhat as a shield, pass through the tissue of the arm, and then, much depleted in velocity and penetration ability, enter the chest wall doing some minimal damage. If he has at all worked out doing any lifting, the chest muscles are dense, and absorb the damage. Eventually he halls forward from the pain making itself aware, and the top of his head is presented to the oncoming bullets. Fatal wounds to the head ensue.

No special laws of physics needed.

The Baden diagram shows a single head shot that entered the forehead above the orbit of the right eye, exited in front of the eye, entered the cheek below the right eye, then after traversing through the upper and lower jaws, exited the right neck on the top right then entered the thorax at the base of the throat. Five wounds with one bullet. Most of the others were either single entry with no exit, or minor secondary wounds.

Fragmentation. Bullets hit bone and break up, even if they are not hollow points (Anyone know what the St. Louis PD uses? Google is failing me.). The bits fly everywhere. You note there is not one single through exit wound except for the hit to the eye. You’d expect at least one pass through.

Wiser heads probably know more.

Good riddance. Now can we get back to real stories, like the situation in the Middle East, the economy and government corruption?

Looks to me like he was breaking his grip to the left thus hitting to the targets right.

Maybe he’s left handed? Know I tend to pull slightly to the right until I get the rhythm back.

It just occurred to me. If he’s sat in the drivers seat, and Brown went for the gun, it’d have to be on the left. Too easy to grab an arm going over your body, otherwise. If he was passenger seat, maybe Brown strained the officers arm in the scuffle?

Just throwing things out right now. We don’t know and won’t know for a while.

Shots in the arm at close range would give credence to the testimony that the officer was being attacked inside his vehicle.

I'd think they would also exhibit powder burns, and the autopsy reports none found.

This is consistent with the witness who said Brown was running away but turned around & ran back toward the officer. The spread of the wounds indicate to me that Brown was a moving, hard to hit target, moving toward the officer, not away.

A justified shooting, IMO, based on the facts currently known.
