Poisoned relationship between police and minorities
CNN ^ | 8/13/14 | Mark O'Mara

Posted on 08/14/2014 3:05:37 PM PDT by Valpal1

Consider the very first interactions: A cop and young black male interact on the street, and both give the other a bit of attitude. The officer gives some attitude because he's tired of getting attitude from other young men, and the young man gives some attitude because he's tired of getting attitude from other cops. Now, who's at fault?

This, as simple as it sounds, is how it starts. Once the infection begins, it grows quickly. If you want to say the cop's at fault because he's the adult with training, you are right. And if you want to say the young man is at fault for disrespect or mistrust of a cop's authority, you are right.

If both sides refuse to move toward the middle, we will all just keep going down this path, and another black family will plan another funeral. Or we can agree that we, each of us, will be better off accepting responsibility for an infection that we cannot defeat individually.

Who makes the first step? The police must. Many police agencies have community outreach programs that are successful. Police officers are in the position of authority, and they have the power to send a message that when they serve a community, they serve all the people of the community equally, regardless of race. To break this cycle, police must recognize there is bias in the system, and they make an effort to treat the people they serve with respect.

Mark O'Mara was GZ defense lawyer.

I thought this was a thoughtful well written opinion.

CNN is supposed to be news, this is history.
The left have always ensured to let blacks think that cops are out to kill them.
This is yet another example of the left using this to get out their base and votes.

A young man should not be having enough interaction with a cop to get an attitude to display.

When an officer tells you to do something...attitude is everything. Just because you can’t rob a bank or Quick Trip...doesn’t make you “oppressed”

I’d take the “black community’s” complaints about police more seriously if blacks weren’t so heavily involved in violent crime.

One of the best ways to promote dissent and civil unrest is through distrust of the police.

The media is fixated on the racial make up of the police force there but I want to know whose fault it is. I doubt they’re going out of their way to hire only white cops. Apparently considerably fewer blacks go into law enforcement.

Even in Detroit the racial mix of the police department doesn’t match the demographics of the city. 63% of officers are black, 34% are white and 3% are Hispanic/other races.

I also keep hearing a bunch of whining that there are no blacks on the city council. Again, whose fault is that?

Who makes the first step? The police must. Isn't the City Council the one to make the first step? It's the city council who writes the job description and who hires the police chief who in turn hires and dictates how his department conducts themselves. An emphasis that police are responsible to the citizens of the city may help change a mindset that they are responsible to noone but their union.

Yes, I’ve had it with all this nonsense. If the police and white people are so awful, then form your own society, pay your own bills, support your own people, and have your own justice system. This integration stuff isn’t working out so well.

Where is the outrage over the black “teen” who sucker punched a 71-yr-old white guy recently for no other reason than he was white?

If people think there was white flight before, they haven’t seen anything yet.

I was surprised. Most of the comments defended the police and criticized the looters.

In the case of Ferguson, it used to be a white suburb, now black. Police are a legacy from the white past.

Well, there’s a lot of crime and attitude in the black community, so the cops are on edge. On the other hand, police militarization has affected the white community too, although usually it takes the form of police pushiness, or dead dogs, or SWAT service of routine warrants.

The shooting details in Ferguson don’t sound good, but a community ready to pillage and burn as their immediate form of protest is going to have a very touchy police force.

Bad all around.

I'm not picking out this particular incident, it is one of many whether it be a mentally challenged White man beat to death in Fullerton, Ca. or a unarmed Black, or a child with a toy gun or dogs assassinated in front of children, there is a growing distrust and animosity brewing against the whole of Police due to the actions of a few. That being said, when people take an incident as an excuse to riot, loot and destroy property the police have no choice but to react. Our resident and his buddies along with the race baiters like jesseeee and notsosharpton incite racial division.

This will not stop as the Dems have to keep this story going or posting on the internet about it.

They the Dems have nothing to run on so they have to do another Zimmermann and get blacks to the polls.

That is why Sharpton, black panthers, Holder etc are all there.

Surprisingly seeing left wing sites being posted on here time and time again by the same posters makes me think they either fell for the left wing crap or they have their own agenda

I was always raised to give respect to adults and LEO’s today many think the world evolves around them and think they can do anything. When a cop or another adult will say no to them ten they get all bent out of shape.

They have been pointing guns at police, robbing, assaulting etc and yet the left are fixated on the racial make up and the cops attitude.

"I’d take the “black community’s” complaints about police more seriously if blacks weren’t so heavily involved in violent crime."

Not to mention the fact that when detectives attempt to get info from black witnesses to solve those violent crimes, they are told "I didn't see nothin'"

"...but I want to know whose fault it is."

They can't pass the tests or get high enough scores to be reachable on the list. I'm a white female, and back in the late 80's, had blacks with lower scores promoted ahead of me, only because they were given extra points.

Cops are trained to “control the situation.”. It’s a wise one who learns the fine line between controlling and dominating. Too often, the only situation that needs controlling is the one an overly aggressive cop created in the first place.
