U.S. Weighs Military Rescue Mission for Yazidi Refugees
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Tuesday, August 12, 2014 Updated 8:40 p.m. ET | Dion Nissenbaum

The U.S. is weighing a military mission in Iraq to rescue thousands of Yazidi refugees, a move that risks putting American forces in direct confrontation with Sunni fighters for the Islamic State.

The proposal is still under development and hasn't been approved by President Barack Obama. U.S. officials said the rescue mission is one of many options the U.S. military is weighing after dropping food and water to dying refugees over the past six days.

"People are looking at ways to do something more than just drop water and supplies," one senior U.S. official said. "You can only do that for so long."

Since last week, the U.S. has sought to halt the militants' advance on the Kurdish city of Erbil and to relieve Yazidis trapped by the fighters on a barren mountain range through a campaign of airstrikes and aid drops.

A rescue mission could expose U.S. forces to direct fire from the militant group Islamic State, also known as ISIS, and that is a risk Mr. Obama may not be willing to accept.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon continued to lay the groundwork for a rescue by sending another 130 military advisers to northern Iraq to develop options the Pentagon can present to the president. The team will be made up of U.S. Marines and members of American special operations forces who have expertise in difficult missions.

It`s terrible that he allowed Iraq to be taken over by the bad guys after all the sacrifice that was made by so many, but the right thing to do now is to rescue the people trapped.

Not important who gets the credit, the military alone that do the mission should get the credit, NOT the one that allowed the problem to get this far.

Waste of time. Where are you going to take these people....every muslum country will treat them like pests or worse. You would have to take them to a Christian Country.

If you want to fix the problem, fix the problem, Iran. Bomb them 24/7 until they surrender unconditionally. They are the source of Islamic Terror Worldwide. Have been for decades.

obozo will only protect jihad muzzies..he will not protect Christians, Jews. He will only protect his own...the enemies of We the People. obozo is a raging traitor, a collaborator with enemies of the state. What do you do when you get your hands on a traitor...let me count the ways.

His “military advisors”...they know the score & who he is and what he’s attempting to accomplish...how can they just stand there & and bow to this traitor, while he plots against the USA? Where are the Praetorian Guards??..

See this article:

Pentagon: Yazidi rescue mission in Iraq is ‘far less likely’

http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/14/world/meast/iraq-crisis/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

People are dying, but the US first wants to “complete the evaluation of the situation”... how long will that take?!

Then they go on and say that things aren’t really that bad, but continue with some statistics which show things are actually worse than dreadful... but it’s only Christians who are being killed, so why should Obama care... (/sarc)

Thanks for the update. Maybe Obama will arrange decent burials for the Yezidis who didn’t make it off the mountain.

Iraq evacuation of Yazidis on hold as White House declares siege is over.

The Obama administration has ruled out for now a risky US military mission to rescue thousands of Iraqis stranded on a northern Iraqi mountain, declaring a siege by Islamist extremists to be over.

After a small complement of special forces and US aid workers landed on Mount Sinjar to assess the situation of the Iraqi Yazidis – who for days have received air drops of food, water and medicine – the Pentagon said things were not as bad as initially feared. “An evacuation mission is far less likely,” said Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, late on Wednesday.

US humanitarian aid drops would continue, Kirby said, but for now US planes or troops would not come to rescue the remaining Yazidis from the mountaintop terrain that has provided a harsh refuge.

The US has targeted Isis positions in the area with four air strikes since Saturday. The White House confidently declared the mission a success on Wednesday. “The president’s decisive decisions in the immediate wake of the crisis kept people alive and broke the siege of the mountain,” a White House official said.
