A WUSA-TV news van was burglarized in Washington, D.C., Friday while the news crew was interviewing locals nearby, the station reported.
The robbery happened as they were reporting about a sketchy neighborhood app.
The crew said they had locked their van in D.C.s Petworth neighborhood, but someone popped the lock and absconded with the gear of photojournalist James Hash, the backpack of reporter Mola Lenghi, and the purse of intern Taylor Bisciotti.

Then the reporters did a story on how oppressive this country is and explained that this is the result. We need to help pay these people more money.

Actually I just downloaded the app and it’s pretty bad. Just lots of jokes like cemetery is marked dangerous because of scary skeletons or a retail store with discounts so great it’s down right scary!

I am guessing it’s a neighborhood overrun by Amish.

Petworth is one of those DC ‘hoods that IS gentrifying, but isn’t yet gentrified. Still lots of crime there. Good luck to the urban pioneers who’ve moved there. A 20-something friend of my kids moved there last year; moved out this year.

The funny part is that, while Petworth is somewhat sketchy, it is hardly the sketchiest part of DC.
Trinidad comes to mind pretty quickly. Congress Heights. There's a whole lot of places that beat the crap out of Petworth on the sketchiness scale.

I’ve driven through Petworth a few times along Georgia Ave. NW, which goes right through it. It would seem foolish to park a news van—which would obviously be full of valuable equipment—there at night.

On the other hand, one of the least sketchy parts of DC is around the 2000 block of S. St. NW in Georgetown. A number of diplomats from foreign countries live in the neighborhood, so it is watched by Homeland Security as well as the DC cops.

They’re lucky they still have the van.

I’ve driven through Petworth on my way to my favorite southern / soul food diner - the Florida Avenue Grill.
As others have pointed out, Petworth has been gentrifying over the last 10 years. Young left-leaning yuppies out to prove their diversity bona fides.

The very first purpose mentioned for SketchFactor is racial profiling. It apparently did a good job, but seemed only to reinforce it.
