West African patients infected with the Ebola virus will not have access to experimental drugs being used to treat American cases of the disease for several months, if at all, Nigerian health authorities said on Thursday.
Health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu told a press conference he had asked the US health authorities about the unproven medicines used on two American doctors, but was told such small quantities existed that west Africa would have to wait for months for supplies, even if they were proved safe and effective.
Dr Kent Brantly and Dr Nancy Writebol of the evangelical Christian organisation Samantha's Purse contracted the virus while helping to treat victims in Liberia. They were given the drug ZMapp after being evacuated to the US, and appear to be recovering.
A spokesman for the US Centres for Disease Control said "there are virtually no doses available" and they would take several months to manufacture....

Where have you been?
At the Guardian, the only bible they know was written by Marx.
Otherwise it would be “African patients to be guinea pigs!”
Me or the author?
Your comment on the name “Samantha’s Purse”.
It’s Samaritan’s Purse (from the Bible story), not Samantha’s Purse.
Had me worried there. I’m like “What is wrong with Sam’s Purse? and “Who is Samantha?” LOL
yes, evil americans kill helpless africans with deadly new untested drug.
They are very busy, but they have promised to rescue Africa by next Thursday at the latest.
If it failed, it would be more bad juju from the white man.
Ping...
As compared to the virus, which is neither safe nor effective?
What's the harm in offering people the opportunity to use an experimental drug that someone has not decided is *safe* when their alternative is dying a horrible death from Ebola?
Perspective here, folks.....
It has to be deemed *safe* by our overlords to be used by people who are going to die anyway? Not giving them the drug is not safe either.
Like what's going to happen if they take a drug that's not safe? They might die from it?
Really?
Your reasoning doesn’t fit the narrative. “The West is evil. NO MATTER WHAT!”
Whoever wrote the title used the emotionally laden “denied” which is probably a lie. Experimental drugs made in a lab may take hundreds of steps and cost hundreds of thousands for a few doses. The ingredients may be so expensive that its a huge investment to make ten doses. Saying you can’t make and then give away thousands of doses free is not denying the drugs. It’s just not possible to do.
Supposing the drugs worked and there was no lengthy approval required before the FDA would allow them to be made it would still take a year or more to ramp up a large scale operation to produce sufficient quantities.
And of course the same concept applies to the FDA and all the hurdles and delays it imposes on the pharmaceutical industry in terms of bringing new drugs to market. The irony is that the left usually loves such over-caution even if it costs lives by squelching innovation, but in this case there’s a racial angle to be plied so they’ll reverse their usual logic.
...the World has never cared about what goes on in Africa....
Yep - and if something went wrong, it would be, “the Tuskegee experiment,” all over again.
That was why the two doctors took the experimental serum. They were going to die anyway. But experimental is just that, not tested on humans yet. They are the test people now.
Nobody knows yet if those two doctors will live or what effects the drugs will have on them.
Supposedly there is not enough of the drug manufactured yet to ship to Africa.
Have you READ how the drug is produced? have you read about the FDA trials?
There WERE exactly 5 doses in the WORLD and two, which were to be used in a safety trial, were used on people instead.
THE DRUG DOES NOT EXIST IN QUANTITY!!!!
How is that concept hard to understand?
