Unfortunately this battle will give Israel only a temporary respite from a worsening strategic situation. There will still be nearly two million hostile Palestinians living adjacent to Israel in Gaza. They will be governed by Hamas or a new group more closely aligned to the jihadists. The missiles will only become more stealthy and sophisticated.

Actually this Israelis have demonstrated a historically atypical restraint and leniency over the past sixty five years. When Caesar conquered Gaul, the country was Romanized within a generation. There were no refugee camps, adjacent militarized “Gaul” states. The Romans did not honor or preserve Gaul’s language, culture or religion. There was not multiculturalism. When Rome fell there were no internal revolts in Gaul, Spain or Britain.
