Poll: What Americans think about the Israel-Gaza crisis

Gallup has released the results of a poll on American views of the ongoing Israeli ground incursion into Gaza and larger Israel-Palestine issues, which it conducted on July 22 and 23. Gallup asked Americans whether they thought Israel's actions in Gaza were "mostly justified" or "mostly unjustified." Americans are split on that question, but overwhelmingly think Hamas' actions are "mostly unjustified." There are a number of other findings: Americans who have more education are more likely to support Israel's Gaza incursion, for example, while Americans under age 30 oppose it by a two-to-one margin.

There a number of interesting findings in the survey:

The top-line takeaway here is that Israel seems to be in a very strong position with the American public in the near term with regards to its Gaza incursion. The sorts of voters most likely to be politically engaged — older, more informed about the situation, more educated — took Israel's side in the largest numbers. That may help explain why the US is so pro-Israel, although there are a lot of other forces at work there as well.

Israel's weak numbers among the young and Democrats may be a long-term problem for the country. But right now, in the current conflict, some crucial components parts of the American electorate seem to be taking Israel's side.

I work with a guy -- you'll see where this is going -- he is a 50ish, homosexual, leftwing Lunatic. He seems to have little social life outside his temple. His Jewish identity is extremly important to him: he talks of little else (other than health problems). He does not, in fact, believe in God. But he is Jewish, his yearly calendar completely revolves around Jewish holy days, he actively takes roles in the service, volunteers as treasurer, etc. He's Jewish, Jewish, Jewish.

But he had to unsubscribe from his temple's internet chat group. He was terribly upset by the congregation's support for Israel in the current conflict. He felt that the essential humanity of the Palestinians was somehow getting lost in the conversation.

What can one say?

Well it is encouraging that American youth continues to conserve liberal idiocy.

For him, the temple is like a club. He profanes the temple with his presence.

“What can one say?”

They seem to have a problem with understanding a threat when it’s STARING THEM IN THE FACE. Even Israel, itself, had trouble understanding what they were dealing with, until recently.

Back in the 90s, if Arafat and the Palis played their cards a bit better, they could have had Israel by the throat and then finished them off before they knew what hit them...Israel was THAT NAIVE.

But Israel was VERY LUCKY, as the Palis kept blowing themselves up and rejecting any agreement that would have given them the infrastructure required to finish the extermination.

Likewise in Europe...except they didn’t get lucky there, they just sat back and probably sympathized with the poor Germans, that were trying to get through the Depression caused by the Pope...or whatever.

I bet the vast majority of Americans against Israel think that there was an Arab nation called Palestine with citizens called Palestinians that the Jews invaded and displaced.

This is a fundamental confusion.

IOW, it’s a no-brainer that those who side against Israel are no-brainers.
