Israel has dig at Brazil’s 7-1 World Cup defeat after diplomatic row over Gaza bombing

The handbags have come out after a diplomatic argument between Israel and Brazil got, well, very personal.

Due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Brazil has recalled its ambassador from Israel and declared that they ‘strongly condemn the disproportionate use of force by Israel in the Gaza Strip’.

However, Israel’s response was to criticise Brazil’s diplomatic abilities – and even have a dig at their World Cup performance.

Yigal Palmor, a spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry, gave a statement to the Jerusalem Post, saying: ‘Israel’s response is perfectly proportioned in accordance with international law. This is an unfortunate demonstration of why Brazil, an economic and cultural giant, remains a diplomatic dwarf.

‘This is not football. In football, when a game ends in a draw, and when you think proportion is 7-1, is disproportionate.

‘Sorry to say, but not so in real life and under international law.’

Reminds me of the difference between East and West Berlin when the Wall was still up.

If you haven’t seen “City of God,” you should check it out. Makes me want to stay far, far away from Rio!

Still that first photo is photoshopped, they always have wider barriers.

Taller, and with broken glass mixed into the mortar along the top.

Better transcription:

“This is not football. In football, when a game ends in a draw, you think it is proportional, but when it finishes 7-1 it’s disproportionate. Sorry to say, but not so in real life and under international law.”

And a similar penalty for an attempted crossing.

We rented a “Project” temporary shop in Santos and indeed it had a high wall with glass on the top. Still had to have a guy stay there all night to keep the thieves out.

"Due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Brazil has recalled its ambassador from Israel and declared that they ‘strongly condemn the disproportionate use of force by Israel in the Gaza Strip’."

Maybe Israel should have told the Brazilian ambassador that this year, Hamas has fired 2,500 missiles into Israel, with the intent to kill, disfigure, main or cripple as many non combatant men, women and children as possible. In other words, Hamas has initiated acts of war, is engaging in genocide and has committed crimes against humanity. No other nation would not respond with great counter violence because survival is not a matter of being "proportionate." Israel could tell Brazil that it merely lost a game, and their sadness is understandable. However, Israel is threatened with the loss of tens of thousands of lives of its citizens, and Brazil has displayed a most undiplomatic and craven lack of compassion.

Yes, Israel jeered at Brazil for the loss of a game. But Brazil has in essence, jeered at Israel for the loss of lives of its citizens, and the ongoing terror they are having to endure. "Disproportionate" my ass.

That sounds about right for the area.

I enjoyed the Sao Vincente and Santos area. I ended up there following a trio elétrico during Carnaval. Great fun - We went to Ilha Porchat another time and then through the favela to the surfing beach Itaquitanduva. So many years later everyone must know about the spot now, there's even video on Youtube of the hike through the jungle.

Yes both have beautiful beaches.

There is a little Lanchette on Rua Frei Gaspar that had the best lunches and naturally on Wednesdays they served not only Feijoada, the best Feijoada.

Even with the not uncommon blight of common Brazil, in general and especially Santos/Sao Vicente was food paradise. Whenever I get a chance to return, you can bet that will be my target destination.
