Why Tony Dungy’s comments about Michael Sam aren’t really a surprise
Washington Post ^ | 7/22/14 | Cindy Boren

Michael Sam may not be a distraction this week at the St. Louis Rams training camp, but the same cannot be said about Tony Dungy.

The former coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts found himself drawing criticism for telling the Tampa Tribune that, if he were still coaching today, he wouldn’t have drafted Sam “(n)ot because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it.

He’ll be fired. We’ve reached a point in which what one says carries more weight than what one does. If he’d killed somebody, or killed a bunch of dogs, he’d still be OK. But he said something “wrong” and must be eliminated.

I’ve known Tony very well for a long time. Wonderful man. These last two days haven’t helped my blood pressure.

We’ll see what Tony is made of in the next day or so. He can certainly clarify and restate his position to be clear, or he backs off it and accepts the radical’s premise.

We here in Indy sure like the man. He seems a good person.

Dungy isn't getting any criticism from me, nor will he get much from the players, if any. However, the sports networks are media and are just as leftist as the regular news media.

Does Dungy care? I doubt it. He knows Who holds the future in His hand.

Let’s see. First day of Mini-camp, Sam shows up with a Film Crew to make his Reality Show. Oh yeah, team player all the way. Michael Sam has no intention of playing down one in an NFL game. He’s going to make more money on Access Hollywood.

Today, Rush has been claiming that ESPN (Dungy’s employer) hasn't put anything about this story on its website. However, it's on Mike Wells’ NFLNation blog (and not behind some paywall). Hey, Rush: the ESPN search function still works.

Media double standard 101

1) He’s gay, but it shouldn’t matter because he’s just a football player.

2) He’s a football player, so it should matter that he’s gay.

Michael Sam may not be a distraction this week at...

and, yet, you (the author) is writing an article about him.

It’s such an innocuous statement and is clearly based on Dungy’s observation of the high drama surrounding Sam to date. While Dungy will likely be fired legally from a crony capitalist business, it has the moral sanction of the government and Obama behind it. Effectively freedom of speech has been eliminated.

As a normal/straight football player, I would NOT want to be near him when his blood is flying around during a game.

This is a wrongful death lawsuit just waiting to happen...but the homosexual deviants do not want to hear the truth.

Tony - tell those idiots to take a hike. Do not apologize for telling the truth. That is why this nation is in such a mess.

Dungy was clear that it wasn’t because of his personal feelings about Sam being gay. It had to do with the distraction to the team that will come with all of it and the potential harm it could have for the team.

That type of distraction simply isn’t worth a player that may not be good enough to make the team.

It’s only a story because he’s gay. The same statement could be (and WAS) made often about Tim Tebow. A solid player that could be a serviceable back up - but who came with such distractions that it wasn’t worth having him on the roster.

Ask Rex Ryan or Bill Belichek.

Every team avoids drafting players with various personal problems because they don’t want to carry the baggage ... Don’t forget too that 32 teams passed up on Sam six times before the Rams decided to select him.

He’s more interested in being a gay activist than being a football player.

I also love Olberman’s comment. What an idiot. If these people had ever coached a football team they would understand EASILY what Dungy means and it doesn’t have to be an NFL team to make that clear.

They stand on the sidelines and critize - literally. The people the loudest are always the ones involved the least with the process and that goes the same for parents who never volunteer to help or coach.

Even though you are both right, the way some people may have “heard” it, or “took” it, may make them uncomfortable and it might have hurt their feelings.

And when that happens...well, we all know that someone MUST lose their job over someone’s feelings being hurt!
