Georgia Runoff: Republicans Pick Senate and House Nominees Tuesday

Georgia Republicans will pick their nominee for Senate in a runoff Tuesday, ending Democratic nominee Michelle Nunn’s nine-week wait for an opponent in the open-seat contest.

The Senate contest has reverberated around the Peach State, creating three open-seat House races with GOP runoffs that will also be decided Tuesday.

In the statewide race, many Republicans said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., has a small edge over former Dollar General and Reebok CEO David Perdue. Both of whom have spent millions on the anticipated low-turnout contest, and polls close at 7 p.m.

In May, Perdue came in first in a seven-candidate Republican primary field that included three members of Congress with 31 percent — below the 50 percent threshold to avoid a runoff. Kingston came in second with 26 percent.

But turnout in a mid-summer runoff is unpredictable. And a Republican runoff in Kingston’s 1st District could also help boost the congressman’s chances because turnout may be higher in his geographic base.

The Senate race is rated Favored Republican by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

All three House races are rated Safe Republican contests by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

Lots of negative adds from both camps.

Kingston has 22 years... He’s part of the problem even if he and the other guy are similar... Going with the other guy... (notice my lack of enthusiasm at my choices....)

Heard an ad for K on the truck radio just this afternoon. (I guess some guys just never quit :) It was a 60 sec ad and touted various “conservative” people and organizations backing K.

When the ad said the National Chamber of Commerce, I ‘bout wrecked my truck :)

I live in SC and don’t know K from a hole in the ground. But his ads have a pronounced GOPe ring to them.

Most GOPe support is going to Kingston's opponent, David Perdue. Kingston was not my first choice, but he does have the second most Conservative voting record in Georgia's House delegation (behind Paul Broun). On the other hand, two things bother me about Perdue:
1. Perdue talks about "increasing revenues" as if government is a business instead of a beast that must be shrunk; and
2. It hasn't been many election cycles since Perdue voted in Democrat primaries.

Neither candidate is great, but neither is terrible, either. I preferred Paul Broun but these are my remaining choices...

Kingston is no prize. Perdue is another rich liberal using his name and fortune trying to buy office.

Both of them are losers but, I guess, better than Michelle Nunn.

I’m not a cheerleader for Kingston. Everybody knows I supported Paul Broun. But I have a feeling David Perdue would be Saxby Chambliss’s third term. At least Kingston has a voting record you can lool at. Its not bad.

And Perdue wins narrowly, OF COURSE. Of course. Of course. Kingston deserved strong and unqualified support from all conservatives in this runoff, too many people pretended both were “just as bad” and too many others fell for Perdue’s “outsider” speel.

But that doesn’t mean I want that dykey looking Nunn Jr. to win, I unequivocally support every Republican nominee for the Senate.

In the House races, Hice wins, he seems a bit nutty to me but whatever, it’s a super-safe seat, hopefully he pisses off some libs.

Loudermilk CRUSHES that piece of crap Barr, hopefully putting the final nail in his pathetic comeback attempts. Go away Bob.

In another race, the GOP nomination for School’s School Superintendent is too close to call. Richard Woods leads Michael Buck by less than 1000 votes with 100% in. Based on a brief examination of the race I’d say Woods is the better man.

The rat nominee for Sec of State is also named Carter, no relation (unless she’s descended from some of Jimmuh’s great grand pappy’s slaves). Carter/Carter and Nunn, the rat ticket from Georgia, what year is this?

Hice 10th district, not one of the SUPER safe ones I was thinking of, but still safe enough for Broun.

One thing is clear, the WORST of the candidates won the GOP nomination.

And another Carter won to succeed Kingston in GA-1 as the GOP nominee. He was not the preferred candidate here, either.

Best news of the night, IMO. (ironically Barr was one of my favorite Congressmen in the 90s, before he turned traitor)

Barr hadn’t run a successful race for the House in 14 years. If he hadn’t been so arrogant in trying to force John Linder out and run in the seat Phil Gingrey did, he might’ve still had his seat today. Then again, if he flaked out in office as he did out of office, perhaps not.

Oh I forgot about that one, Buddy Carter, he’s the jerk who said “Obamacare is not that bad” and even called it by it’s Orwellian name “the unaffordable whatever act”.

He won by 8 points. Ugh.

Yes I remember how Barr ran against Linder for a safe seat in 2002 after the rat remap, abandoning the new version of his own seat which was made more competitive. And he lost and Gingrey held the seat anyway as Georgia voters gave a huge FU to the rats that year.

Is it just me or does actor Simon Callow look a lot like Bob Barr? It’s uncanny.

Eh, the only pic where I'm seeing a resemblance to Barr is this one:

The rest of the time, nope. He looks a bit like Patrick Stewart with hair though:

However, I remember during the Obama church controversy, some freepers were saying Jemimah Wright resembles Barr. That's eerily true, especially when Barr wore his older pair of glasses. Did Barr get ordained a minister, become pastor of a radical leftist black church, and start giving "kill whitey" sermons in his spare time? I wouldn't put it past him. ;-)

Yeah, I was gonna say, not as safe as it used to be (the state Speaker just had to draw an über-safe new GA-09 in his Hall County home that didn’t take in large parts of Gwinnet so that no Atlanta suburbanite could beat a Hall County denizen, leaving surrounding GA-07 and GA-10 potentially competitive. Thanks a lot.

I hope that Hice doesn’t make that race too interesting.
