We should not be surprised that Moscow is categorically rejecting the accusation that it was responsible for the Malaysian airline disaster. For the default position of Russian President Vladimir Putin when confronted with some unpalatable truth is to tell a bare-faced lie. Remember how, when Russian Spetsnaz special forces were rampaging through Crimea earlier this year, Mr Putin told a Russian press conference that there were no Russian forces in Ukraine?
Well, now we are dealing with a similar situation....with the Russian leader trying to shift the blame for the crash on to anyone but himself.
The most recent example of Mr Putin's double dealing was evident at last weekend's World Cup final in Brazil, where he had a private meeting with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, in which, by all accounts, he sought to reassure her that he genuinely sought a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis. Pull the other one, Vlad!
For the more chilling reality was that, just as the match between Germany and Argentina kicked off, a 150-strong armoured column, including tanks and rocket launchers was making its way across Ukraine’s eastern border in Luhansk to provide more military hardware for pro-Russian rebels fighting the Ukrainian government. And there is a strong possibility that the anti-aircraft missile system that shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was among the kit being transported across the border.
What is it about the Russian leader and international sports events? It was during the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Sochi that Mr Putin ordered the invasion of Crimea, thereby provoking an international outcry. And here he is at it again, reassuring Mrs Merkel....that he sought a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis, while giving the order – with virtually his next breath – to invade Russia’s southern neighbour.

1) We could deploy BMD in Poland, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic.
2) We could sell oil and natural gas to Ukraine.
3) We could admit Ukraine to NATO.
4) We could rebuild our own military.
5) We could develop our own energy resources.
I think all of these would catch his attention. Of course we won’t do any of these things as long as the current occupant is in the WH.
