WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States began building a case Friday that would pin the blame for the downing of the passenger jet over Ukraine on separatist forces supported by Russia, in a disaster that could dramatically escalate the crisis in Ukraine. President Barack Obama said one American was among the nearly 300 killed and called for an immediate cease-fire to allow for an unfettered investigation.
Evidence indicates that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile from an area controlled by Russian-backed separatists, Obama said at the White House. He warned that the incident showed the crisis in Ukraine won't be localized or contained to the region.
"This should snap everybody's heads to attention," Obama said.

I’m going to guess that as of yesterday there were no single citizenship Americans onboard and that affected what he was going to say.
They had to wait a day for the State Department to find a dual citizenship American for Obama to have a hook for his comments.

Completely cut Obama off when he said he’d continue to take the lead in Ukraine. If he’s leading as he claims he’s made a complete mess of things there.......just like he did in Syria....and Egypt!
It might escalate the situation if the United States had a President who was an American, or at least who was on America’s side in foreign conflicts. Alas, that is not the case.

Early reports - Chris Plante, WMAL, DC - had the number at 23 US Citizens, based upon the plane’s passenger manifest. That manifest sure changed quickly.
