Marijuana is a gateway to suicide by fire? Yup. Get toasted, then get roasted.

Horrible. I wonder what mental illness he had been walking around with, and how long.

Yup. Get toasted, then get roasted. No, get toasted, get munchies. 1970, BK 59¢ Whopper, fries, freshman 15, oops, I have a Monday 8 am class?
Sorry, unless you are an addictive personality, pot is not a gateway.

Via whatever agent of choice which followed the original tag to genetic code area, be it cannabis, booze, heroin— all receptor mediated and brought on by dependency cycle. Quite well documented actually despite all attempts to ignore the data and the studies. These types of festivals (Burning Man in particular) attracts a heavy cannabis crowd, and a lot more. So it could have been acid, for that matter. But the receptor process remains the same, just different receptors.
Some people run for an endorphin high (a uh, natural high so to speak), and others just keep looking for more receptor satisfaction— the “gateway” allusion.
This case, could be a depressogenic response to chronic alcohol along with any of a dozen agents, including cannabis. Suicides are way up— even among bankers (stoned, paranoid, or otherwise). Deo Vindice.

others just keep looking for more receptor satisfaction the gateway allusion. So drugs are used by those inclined to seek receptor satisfaction - and pot is usually the first illegal one they use. Not much of a gateway.

First through the gate, as it were- to the other narcotic receptor agents. Technically, booze is the first gate— just not classified as a cns narcotic (in the US Pharmacopaeia classification system).
Neither booze or cannabis is “benign” to people with the coding for the response.
Recall the case of the fantastic bassist Jaco Pastorius— who inherited bipolar disease, and whom Joe Zawainul (Weather Report) introduced to booze (which he later said he will carry to his grave the responsibility of killing a musical prodigy). The booze sent Jaco over the bipolar edge and he never came back. Bizarre behaviour and then murdered by a bouncer. Sad.
