To the editor: When the Supreme Court handed down its Hobby Lobby decision, I was glad glad because it would be the start of our country realizing how insane it is to link business and healthcare. ("The Hobby Lobby case proves the necessity of single-payer healthcare," July 1)
I know that offering medical care to workers began as a perk, but having started something is no reason to carry on with an insane system that has made our medical care outrageously and unnecessarily expensive.
Medical care must be made affordable to all, without having businesses get in the way. Our current system is outrageous and makes a mockery of our belief that we are a country not founded on religious demands. We should be a country that takes care of its sick and needy whoever they are and whatever they believe.
Shirley Sacks, Beverly Hills
To the editor: The Supreme Court upheld a challenge to part of the Affordable Care Act that applies to a tiny percentage of the population employed women who cannot afford one of three abortifacients and who are working for small corporations owned by religious people.
Compared to the enormous waivers and extensions granted by the administration, this is nothing. But for Michael Hiltzik, it shows the system has been so shattered that it is time to dump it and adopt a single-payer scheme similar to Canada's, Britain's and France's.
But none of those countries has a true single-payer system, as they all have insurance and private doctors for those who want more than the minimum that the government doles out. They call it "going private," an option of full treatment limited to the rich.

So all of us sheeple may receive the loving high quality health care of a vastly- expanded VA ? ( Of course, the pres and all Congresscritters and all infiltrated-islamicists are exempt )
What a huge difference it made, unreal. So that’s the answer right there for health insurance. Deregulate and stop with the ambulance chasers and the cost will plummet. Litigation insurance is insane, one of my friends is an obstetrician and she pays something like a quarter mill a year.
BUMP for later.
If you want a woman’s right to contraception to not be abused then make contraceptives OTC drugs.
Kind of off-topic, but every time my son or I see a gecko, we say it is an insurance salesman. We saw many insurance salesmen during our recent vacation in Florida.
Freeloaders, communists, union thugs and ‘RAT baby killers might have gotten that out of the Hobby Lobby decision but NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS don’t see it that way. Go choke on a bottle of ink.
Insurance makes sense for large, unplanned expenses. For example, a small percentage of people will get cancer which requires spending huge amounts on medical care in order to have a shot at surviving. We can pay in small premiums for catastrophic coverage because most of us will not experience this.
However, insurance never made sense for routine doctor visits, dental exams, etc. We all pay a higher premium for this because people use it excessively when the out-of-pocket cost is low. Medical costs have also skyrocketed at least partially as a result of this.
Tax exempt medical accounts make more sense for routine doctor and dentist expenses.
Single payer (taxpayer) funded medical insurance (I decline calling it “health care”) is the path to effectively compelling all of us to support unfettered abortion of infant lives.
The Left just can’t resist single payer and the power to compel obedience under penalty of life and death. Support the collective and get timely access. Cause problems and go to the back of the line or have procedures denied totally. Obama is just the latest totalitarian to see the power.
These commies must have conveniently missed all the horrible news about the VA scandals. There’s your single-payer system at “work”, you dumbass.
Yes, thank you Hobby Lobby, for bringing the elitists out of the shadows so that we can ALL see who they are, and exactly what they want the American Health Care System to be. It has been very enlightening.
The VA is a single payer government run health care system and look at the problems that have become endemic at the VA. Do you really want government bureaucrats deciding when and if you get medical care and what care you can receive? At the VA bureaucrats knowingly and criminally hid waiting lists for their bonuses and as a result hundred of veterans died from not receiving prompt care. Do you really think that a single payer government run health care system for the entire country would be any different?
