Extreme Islamist group ISIS have seized 90lb (40kg) of radioactive uranium in Iraq which could be used to make a dirty bomb. The Times reports that the militants seized the material after overrunning a university in the city of Mosul, which they captured last month.
Iraq's ambassador to the UN has now appealed to the international community for help to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq and abroad."
This is believed to be the first time that an Islamist terror group has been able to obtain such a large quantity of radioactive material, and security analysts now fear they could use it in so-called "dirty bombs" – conventional bombs loaded with radioactive substances.

I would say several bombs around the country. Panic ensues. Martial Law declared. Obama stays President. Government gets to use all the bullets they bought. Mission accomplished.
When I said “blame conservatives”, I didn’t even go the step further that they would blame conservatives for ACTUALLY SETTING OFF THE BOMBs,
but that’s seriously a distinct possibility.

What happens when it ceases to be in boxes and instead becomes a fine airborne particulate dispersed over a city? Is it deadly then?

Exactly. U-238 isn’t really the problem the media is trying to make it out as. Now if they had stolen some plutonium, or gotten into some nuclear waste with some long half-life gamma emitters, then all this hoopla would be justified.
