Camden, New Jersey, with a population of 70,390, is per capita the poorest city in the nation. It is also the most dangerous. The city's real unemploymenthard to estimate, since many residents have been severed from the formal economy for generationsis probably 3040 percent. The median household income is $24,600. There is a 70 percent high school dropout rate, with only 13 percent of students managing to pass the state's proficiency exams in math. The city is planning $28 million in draconian budget cuts, with officials talking about cutting 25 percent from every department, including layoffs of nearly half the police force. The proposed slashing of the public library budget by almost two-thirds has left the viability of the library system in doubt.

I don’t blame you; without family and decent work nearby, I wouldn’t be living here in NJ. A huge problem for the whole state is the loss of its younger taxpayers (who follow the companies that are leaving). It is a small enough state that you can live in PA (even keeping a NJ job if you have one). A friend works in NYC with a couple of people who commute from PA.
sounds like there are lots of empty buildings in Camden to ship illegals fleeing poverty and violence

I would guess that there area number of factors in the death of malls.
1)High rents = higher markups = inability to compete with Walmart, Amazon, etc.
2)Stagnant economy & unemployment mean fewer shoppers.
3)Middle class moved further away.
4)Uncontrolled packs of feral “youth” ran the remaining customers away. Feral “youth” buy little, steal a lot. Management & stockholders say, “Why bother...goodby!”
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
Not with a bang but a whimper.
How are the guns “easily purchased” in PA, with its “lax gun laws”.
I live in Texas, and we have to follow the FEDERAL gun laws and that means a BACKGROUND CHECK if you buy from a licensed dealer - and that is a serious check. Yes, you don’t need one for a private sale, but there are not a whole lot people that will sell privately to gang members, since it is (or can be) a felony, if you know the person is a felon.
Seems some other dynamic is at work there...wonder what it could be.
Oh. I'm not going to say it.
Burlington, VT has been run by Democrats since then, and it's very pleasant.
Are you sure it's a party thing?
-——How much they contribute to the city-——
The universities contribution is “in kind”. They have academics that pontificate on how things should be run.
Ditto Portland, Seattle, Madison, and many other large and small cities in the Midwest and West.
there’s a large state police barracks/training facility and also a national guard base in this small town. Probably a shade better class of people than Camden
It's not the politics. It's the fence.
Jim, Burlington gets the lions share of state revenue through lobbying and a large voting block. Look into act 60 and 68. I’m in southern VT. a town of 2200 and we are a sharing town which means we more than match our school budget and seen that to the state, our roads look like Bosnia and we consider ourselves No. Mass because that as much attention as we get from Montpelier.
The battleship New Jersey is there, as a museum. So one reason to visit.
Thankfully you can get to her via water taxi from the Philly waterfront.
“Are you sure it’s a party thing?”
Indeed - It is just a coincidence that the population is largely black. We will keep playing these word games to our complete demise because you can’t fix what you can’t correctly identify.
I don't have any sense of the local dynamics, but one would think that distressed waterfront property just across from Center City Philadelphia would have redevelopment potential. Of course, I live in Gentrification Central (D.C.), so I tend to see the brighter side of things.
Let’s not play the race card.
I postulate your progressive cities have universities with affluent outside sources of income.
Camden style...what America will look like after liberals rule it.
Look at the Indian Reservations. They aren’t black. Yes, it is Democrats.
