Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison for bribery, money laundering and other corruption that spanned his two terms as mayor including the chaotic years after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.
U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan handed down the sentence Wednesday morning.
Nagin was convicted Feb. 12 of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from businessmen who wanted work from the city or Nagin's support for various projects. The bribes came in the form of money, free vacations and truckloads of free granite for his family business.
The 58-year-old Democrat had defiantly denied any wrongdoing after his 2013 indictment and during his February trial. Moments before sentencing, a subdued Nagin made a brief statement, thanking the judge for her professionalism. He made no apologies. "I trust that God's going to work all this out," he said.
After the sentencing Nagin smiled and hugged supporters as he walked out of the courtroom with his wife, Seletha, and other family members and friends.

Duplicates. Whaddya gonna do?
I told one FReeper the other day - after he posted a dupe - that I understand how search sucks and all that, but posting a duplicate, really? When that same article has been in the top of Breaking News for the last two hours?
You got that right.
They wake up. Check The Drudge report. See an article and think; “Wow, I’ll post that on Free Republic.”
And they do.
sould be LIFE for committing fraud against the public like this
The rest of us haven’t been to Drudge in many a year.

That's the way it is on Law & Order!
How does he get to sashay out of court with friends and family?
Maybe that is how they do things in Chocolate City.
Was it part of the judge's ruling? That he report at such and such a date? Shame on me...I didn't read the article. Answer is probably there.
Sorry, I'm a little bit ADHD today....don't have much patience.
"My bad."

*snicker*
His Chocolate City speech was one of the most idiotic things I've heard.
He supposebly is gonna report in Sept. Maybe he has a cruise lined up or something and the judge didn’t want to deprive him of one last vaca. But then again, there will most likely be an appeal due to gwb influencing him into the frauds he committed.
Gov. Blanco up for any charges re: Katrina?
Any civil suits...she really botched Katrina and Bush gave her every option to request federal help.
He was leading her to take it but she wouldn't take it. It was up to the governor to request federal assistance and she didn't request it.
Welcome to the REAL “Chocolate City”, your (ahem) honor.
Send him to Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP, also known as Angola), it is 76% black, 24% white so he should enjoy the “Chocolate City” he was yearning for.
My remark comes as one who is reading, not posting. As of right now the article is not in breaking news. If it would not have been posted the 3rd time, I may have never known. ;0)
