~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Patriots Point, South Carolina! Mount Pleasant is a suburban town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States, within the CharlestonNorth CharlestonSummerville Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the foot of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge is Patriot's Point, a naval and maritime museum, home to the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, which is now a museum ship. The Ravenel Bridge, an eight lane highway that was completed in 2006, spans the Cooper River and links Mount Pleasant with downtown Charleston. The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in the summer of 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown appeared on the horizon of Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum would become one of the largest museums of its kind in the world with the addition of other Historic Landmark ships like the destroyer USS Laffey, known as The Ship That Would Not Die, the Balao class submarine Clamagore and the Treasury class Coast Guard cutter Ingham (the Ingham would later move to the Miami Dade Historical Maritime Museum in 2009). Priceless war planes used during wars and conflicts spanning from WWII to Desert Storm are featured aboard the Yorktown's 40,000 square foot hangar bay and atop the 888 foot flight deck. Patriots Point is also the home of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and their official Medal of Honor Museum with tons of interactive exhibits. Located landside is the only replica of a Vietnam Support Base in the country as well as a Cold War Submarine Memorial paying tribute to the sacrifices and triumphs made by the men and women during the Cold War. Good morning, Everyone.
Good morning to our
Thank you, Lauren, for preparing the
Canteen for todays activities.
Today will be a good day to be near the water.
Make sure y'all bring sunscreen and hats!
As usual, it was a crazy Monday.
And today doesn't look much better;
had a dozen emails in my box this morning
(all after I left work),
which means I'll have to move into lurker mode.
So, for now, I need to make my rounds,
catch up on pings while it's still quiet.
Please stay.
Grab a cup of joe or tasty tea.

Come on in and sit for a while.

silliness,
and plain old BS

Good Morning To The Canteen
Thank you for the Road Trip, laurenmarlowe.
I really enjoyed this...ended up reading the history of the USS Yorktown.
I also found a connection to my husband's ship, the USS Bexar.
Yorktown provided cover for the evacuation of the Tachen Islands in
Feb 1955...My husband had never seen such desperate people as
those civilians his ship had crammed aboard on deck. Over 28, 000
Nationalist troops and civilians were evacuated to safety from the
Communist Chinese govt.
Hope your day goes well.

It is a generally forgotten piece of history..It was a tense time..Chinese communist artillery could reach the Islands and our ships ...There was a lot in the papers at the time...I did not know my husband’s ship was involved until later..Thankfully the Chinese chose not to engage us..The US then concentrated on protecting Formosa and more strategic Islands...
Our son was 7 months old at that time..He was 6 weeks old when my husband went to sea aboard the Bexar.

It's going OK here in Oklahoma. A little hot though.
Yesterday during Bo and I's trip to the lake were running the lake road and he decided he wanted to look for turtles and gophers on the left side of the road where the golf course is. He crossed the fence to get on the course and I put on his leash to take him back to the road.
There were a couple of golfers and I didn't want to take the chance of him getting hit by a golf ball.
As we were walking the road, we saw a small little water snake slither out of the mud and get under a tree. Bo wanted to look under the tree to see where it was heading and I pulled him back. Don't like to take chances with snakes.
We ended the trip walking the beach. Bo swam in the water which was the best part of the trip.
Interesting stuff going on with the trip.
It's been pushing 100 the last few days. As Bo and I headed back into town, we saw the traffic lights flashing. Also heard PSO of Oklahoma dispatch some outages. Not sure if they were in the Tulsa or Lawton areas.
Wouldn't surprise me if there were outages due to all this heat.
Hopefully we'll get some rain today or tomorrow. Crossing our fingers.
I did do the grass cutting work with the lawnmower and the weed-eater yesterday morning.
Finally today is Patch Tuesday for Windows. Expecting updates for my Windows 7 computer.
