Republicans must look to Cleveland to expand 2016 presidential chances
Washington Examiner ^ | July 2, 2014 | Brett M. Decker and Van Hipp

Republican National Committee officials announced recently that the party's nominating convention for the next presidential election will be held in Cleveland or Dallas. “These world-class cities have the ability to provide our next presidential nominee a launching pad that will put a Republican in the White House in 2016,” said site-selection chairman Enid Mickelsen.

Given the ultimate goal, the GOP's big bash should be in Ohio. A lot more than one election is riding on the next campaign for the Oval Office. After losing the popular vote in five of the last six presidential contests, many of the Republican faithful are wondering whether the party establishment is still capable of winning nationally.

In recent years, Republicans have been adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, losing to President Obama in 2012 even though his job-approval rating was below 50 percent, and failing to take back the Senate in 2010 or 2012 despite favorable odds. The Grand Old Party will lose again if it doesn't do something differently. The Dallas area is a conservative stronghold, but the GOP is assured of winning Texas in 2016.

These two reporters don’t know what the hell they are talking about! Dallas is a Democrat stronghold; NOT Conservative!

Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston are all Dem and sanctuary cities for illegals!

Cleveland is OK. Dallas is OK. The city isn’t the issue. The issue is the GOP-E losing the conservative base of the party.

Exactly, but so far I don't see any signs that the GOPe will change.

Dallas would be interesting: the end of Rick Perry and Dewhurst.

Huh???? ....Both are serving out their last terms.

That’s what I mean. The end of the attacks on the heartless we saw from Perry in 2011-2012. When he was in office he could at least pretend to have a mandate to pander to illegals.

It is a good thing Cincinnati wasn’t picked. There’d be too much anger about Boehner.

Same here. They should be putting the brakes on the candidacy of Thad Cochran, but at this point, they aren’t.

Well, this looked pretty unscripted at the DNC.

Personally, I think they are insane to bring a convention of the RNC here. Democrat stronghold, union base auto & steel workers...ever look at the electoral map for Ohio?

There’s a reason Ohio has been “democrat” and it ain’t the rest of the state!

Lots to see and do and be safe? They’ll need special security details to move around here due to the democrat nutcases!

a. I would never dare venture downtown for an RNC event of this size. Way too, too dangerous.

b. I would rather drive to Columbus, Cinci, anywhere else to attend

Sorry to all those RNC Clevelanders, but dang...don’t be so pollyanish! This can do nothing but go very badly for the RNC.

re: Cleveland

In the last few years, Cleveland hosted Special Oympics and Senior Olympics. "Downtown" was totally safe and participants had nothing but praise for the events.

The mayor has done a great job getting money spent on projects to make the city convention-ready. There was next to no population in that part of the city, now some high-income condos and apartments have even turned that around. The city has a good working relationship with (republican) Gov Kasich, so would not be alone in keeping things safe.

As far as winning over the state? Ohio is always very close in presidential elections, and turning a few thousand votes to the Republican side would make a difference. It's possible, since Obama hasn't done anything to help this area.

I know Cleveland bashing is fun, and a percentage of it is deserved. But as far as the convention being here?....there's a reason the RNC people evaluating possibilities have been impressed.

When was the last time both conventions occurred in the same state?

1972. Both the Democrats and the Republicans held their convention in Miami.

How is holding a convention in a key swing state “moving left”?

Sorry grania, we’ll have to disagree.

Hosting the Special Olympics etc. is not like hosting a hotbedded political presidential convention...

Protestors, violence and all right in the very heart and stronghold of the democratic base in Ohio. If you think the Cleveland Police are ready to deal with such matters...I’ve got some land to sell you at Burke Lakefront.

This is a foolish choice.

On that note...we’ll have to just disagree.

Yes, and any missteps or controversies will be magnified by the massive coverage local media will give the thing.

It’s a high-risk/high-reward proposition. If it goes perfectly it’ll help in Ohio. If the Dems stir something up, and it’s undeniable that they did, it’ll help.

But if something goes wrong? Not good. The way things are going I’d expect the Dems to infiltrate to take advantage of that. All it takes is one or two Dems successfully pretending to be convention-going neo-Nazis or Klan members or something and doing a local interview or two that conforms to the slanderous right-wing stereotypes the Left has been and is peddling to completely screw things up.
