Scientists are desperately scrambling to face the newest global change problem: plastic in the ocean.
A recent expedition involving over 400 scientists from around the world has discovered that there is plastic in ALL of the worlds oceans.
Really. ALL of them.
Oceans, not scientists.
The findings reveal that plastic pollution is far more widespread than first thought, says Science World Report. Rather than being in isolated pockets of the ocean, it's a global problem. It's clear that steps need to be taken in order to reduce the amount of plastic waste currently winding up in our world's oceans.
A quick survey of American households reveals that there is plastic there too.
In at least one American household that Im aware of, plastic grocery bags have taken over at least 23% of drawer space in 87% of kitchen drawers and 63% of the corner space in ALL of kitchen cabinets.
The first step of course in confronting the irresistible tide of global change from plastic, will be the mad scramble of dozens of film stars, thousands of research scientists, tens of thousands of environmental activists, and hundreds of thousands of gullible young who, while pretending to get an education, will demand government grants be made available to study the problem.
And count on the scientists to do their part to confront the problem.
This is step two.
Valiant public servants that they are, theyll devote countless person-hours to writing grant proposals, having conferences at hotels they otherwise couldnt afford, and acting like they really work, all while wearing corduroy pants and flannel shirts in solidarity with those recently denied access to free birth control chemicalsthat are subsequently peed into the oceans.
The man-scientists, of course, will likely wear something a bit more effeminate in solidarity with urban hipsterism.
In this effort, scientists of ALL genders will be funded by dozens of film stars, tens of thousands of gullible environmental activists; but not the hundreds of thousands of gullible youn, who, while pretending to get an education, will instead buy pot and beer with money sent from home.
[T]he abundance of floating plastic fragments allows many small organisms to sail on them and colonize places they could not access previously, says Andres Cosar, a researcher with the project. But probably, most of the impacts taking place due to plastic pollution in the oceans are not yet known."
And thats when the big money starts rolling in.
Thats step three.
The unknown problems could demand millions of dollars just in state grants. And its likely that other unknown global change problems will be revealed while studying the unknown current global change problems they have already identified, knowingly.
Payday!
They could take 100 years to identify and incorrectly forecast the problems associated with ocean-borne plastic.
While you non-scientists see the missed forecasts as some type of problem with the science, in truth the incorrect projections serve the most important scientific outcome imaginable: They keep they gravy train rolling while pushing doomsday to just behind the next horizon.
Payday!
Our observations of the size distribution of floating plastic debris point at important size-selective sinks removing millimeter-sized fragments of floating plastic on a large scale, says an abstract from the report. This sink may involve a combination of fast nano-fragmentation of the microplastic into particles of microns or smaller, their transference to the ocean interior by food webs and ballasting processes, and processes yet to be discovered.
Processes yet to be discovered is the part thats most worrying, of course.
Theres already an army of 400 scientists waiting to discover the unknowns.
So please, whatever you do: Dont tell them about my kitchen.
Whatever it is we know it is caused by man and government must fix it.
Oh and I’d need crew to help me. A couple cute blondes would probably be needed.
oh noes
It appears my house has also been subject to this new invasive species...
what to do??
We’re laughing now, but if we don’t change out the politicians we have now, this Rube Goldberg scheme for grabbing more money and power is gonna get legs.
Not to mention of course all the “stop plastic pollution (PP) now!” t-shirts to be printed. Then of course an inevitable controversey will erupt when it’s discovered that millions of such t-shirts and bumper stickers and posters were printed with ink based in part on petroleum products (gasp: plastics!)
Then a House Investigstion committee will be called to look into the practice (because everyone knows they don’t have more important things to do, than protecting the world’s oceans), eventually “discovering” (ie claiming but never verifying) some TEA party backed candidate has a connection to said scandal, who will then quietly be “audited” by the IRS.
When a Democratic link is also discovered, despite the best efforts of the Democrats on the committee (and their RINO lackeys) promises to “get to the bottom of this” will breathlessly be repeated until the next fundraising concert, all proceeds to benefit the Stop PP Now organization. (SPPN) An organization which the IRS fast-tracked to non-profit status coincidently enough. (but some “loony” FReepers claim has been used as a front to rig elections in Democrat’s favor).
And that, is the rest of the story.
I thought this was a John Semmis post.
Someone ring up Bill Koch...
“Whatever it is we know it is caused by man and government must fix it.”
Well, with plastic junk it IS MAN that is causing it. However, it will all be blamed on the U.S., and it will be our government forcing us to fix it. (I imagine that most of the crap is from third-world countries and China where they live among the garbage, and much less worried about tossing it into the ocean.)
Who is John Semmis?
ping
Must be someone that I can give all my money to, in exchange for ocean-plastic credits. I’ve just got to assuage my guilt!
(preferably someone that knows a great deal about this issue, and has a big plastic footprint himself... until I find this... person... I’ll just call this someone ManBearPlastic)
George Carlin does an EXCELLENT smack down in this routine.

The trouble is that no one can find it. It doesn't show up on Google Earth and no cruise ships, naval vessels or cargo ships have run into it. But, like global warming, they swear by it and will call you names if you ask for proof.
Sounds like a business opportunity for you! Perhaps get for every $500 you get in you’ll plant a $15 tree, and in 10 years it will be made into biodegradable paper bags!
(Oh wait, paper was bad so they switched us to plastic.) Okay - turn the trees into wicker baskets to carry our groceries in. Although there are already studies out about the bacteria and crap that grows in those reusable canvas and cloth bags. So hey - maybe the wicker (with ventilation, holds less moisture, etc.) WOULD be better.
Hey - forget it! I’m going to look on on youtube on how to make wicker baskets. (I KNEW I should have taken that course on basket weaving back in college!).
