The ceremonial sharing of food has been an important feature of all cultures, everywhere, at all times. It’s an important and proven way of bonding those who participate in the sharing. That’s why we have State Dinners, Thanksgiving dinners ... and elementary-school birthday parties with cupcakes. There simply aren’t any meaningful substitutes.
