World View: USS Bataan with 1,000 marines to Join Six Other Warships in the Persian Gulf
Breitbart ^ | 6/28/14 | John J. Xenakis

CNN is reporting that the USS Bataan is being sent to the Persian Gulf with 1,000 marines on board. There is no word of a planned invasion. That will make seven warships there -- the USS Arleigh Burke, the USS Truxton, the USS Gunston Hall, the USS George HW Bush, the USS O'Kane, the USS Philippine Sea, and the USS Mesa Verde -- along with helicopters and warplanes that can be used for an invasion or for an evacuation of US citizens.

There have been US drones flying over Iraq for several days, but now it's been confirmed that the drones are armed with Hellfire missiles to provide air support and force protection in case the 180 or so US military advisors currently in Baghdad come under attack. CNN and Politico

This is not going to turn out well. You need plenty of air support to protect those ships and I don’t see that nearby.

I’m not following your question?

Do you mean why there are 1000 Marines on a ship? If that is your question, then that is normal. Actually it may be fewer Marines than normal.

If you mean the ships, then they all protect each other. Trust me it’s hard to get close to them for hostile operations. They are well protected by Satellites (to see everything around them), Aircraft, defense weapons on the ship and Subs.

My thoughts, too.

But, then again, a couple of weeks ago I read on FR (and saw the aerial picture) that the Prez had ordered five nuclear carriers to simultaneously dock in VA for some sort of safety review. This concentration has NEVER been allowed since Pearl Harbor, but hey, he's the CIC.

Trust me... its not as easy as you think. The Navy knows what they are doing.

The story says the USS George HW Bush, an aircraft carrier, is among the ships.

One thing for sure... All this military in the area is extremely dangerous.

What make you think they are bunched together? They are in the theater of operations. Also the troop carriers seem to be well protected by the other combatants in the ships named.

- - -it seems to me that I have read about a missile
designed to specifically attack a ship on water fired
from a land based position????These weapons are located in the middle east??? What is the defense against that?

Land-based anti-ship missiles have been around since WW2, and most countries have them. There are various defenses, including just shooting them down like an attacking aircraft. They are a threat for sure, but the US Navy hasn’t (until now) been especially vulnerable.

Those big blue water ships are very vulnerable in the narrow confines of the well fortified shallow Persian Gulf.

In 2006, a Swedish HSwMs Gotland-class submarine "defeated" a U.S. Navy carrier in an exercise, as it penetrated the American defensive measures, essentially "sinking" the carrier.

Okay and how many U.S. Navy ships have been sunk in the last 50 years?

I don’t know what the conditions were of this exercise?

Nevertheless, I do know our Carrier Task forces are protected by Subs, Satellites, ship defense weapons (like the Phalanx) aircraft and other ships.

None. However there is a good possibility that that the Israelis will feel compelled to attack Iran’s nuclear infrastructure before the end of Netanyahu’s tenure. willingly or unwillingly there are many scenarios in which the United States would be engaged. The Iranians have purchased state of the art Chinese made shore to ship missiles. The development of these missiles was a strategic priority for China. In event of war with Taiwan (now thankfully unlikely) the Chinese required the means to clear the Taiwan Strait of hostile naval elements. They even managed to obtain American missile guidance systems during the Clinton administration. Those ships have excellent defensive capabilities but it is not clear if they would be effective in such a narrow, shallow location. The Iranians also have asymmetrical offensive capabilities. There are close to ten thousand brave young American sailors alone on the two carriers currently deployed in the Gulf. The fear is the US Navy could face a debacle worse than Pearl Harbor in less than fifteen minutes.
