Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is throwing his support behind Sen. Lamar Alexander in the Tennessee Republican's bid for re-election this year, Politico reported.
Alexander is currently campaigning against state Rep. Joe Carr ahead of the August Republican primary to earn a place on the November ballot.
Gingrich joins other prominent GOP members, such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Ronald Reagan economist Art Laffer, in backing Alexander. Carr supported Gingrich's 2012 White House run.
"He's one of the most ideal-oriented and solution-oriented people Ive ever worked with," Gingrich told Politico. "In the primary I believe that Lamar Alexander is far and away the best choice, I think hell win the general election handedly. Its going to be a huge Republican year."
Gingrich and Alexander's other supporters are hoping the 73-year-old can win a third term in office as the Republicans target control of the Senate. Politico reported that Alexander's backers think his seniority will help him earn some pull in education and healthcare issues should the GOP take over the majority.
Alexander has, however, ruffled the feathers of some in the party because of his vote in support of a comprehensive immigration bill last year.

The Newties were insisting that he was the best choice in 2012.
idiot
You are going to find feet of clay EVERYWHERE.
It is par for this sinful earth.
I am done with the newt.
One of the main reasons we had Romney as the nominee was him as the alternative.
I love it when people on FR speak of Romney as somehow "chosen" by the GOPE, and somehow forced on us all.......they conveniently forget just how unbelievably chameleon like, stupid, and simply outrageous his opposition was (and is).
Way to go, Noot.
Just confirming what some of us suspected from the beginning.
Who is Newt?
Yeah, well ... go enjoy retirement, newt .... stay out d’politics
Alexander is the very picture of using political connections to self enrich. Practically all of his fortune came from sweetheart deals. He is a mealy mouthed amnesty champion who is either stupid as a pile of manure or completely bought off by special interest.
I know, and I fell for it.
Never again.
Yes, Newt was the man around here in 2012. You got the zot machine if you backed anyone else (I know from first hand experience).
Newt is not trust worthy, which is why lost in 2011. Once he was great and to this day deserves our respect for his past efforts. Sadly he is no longer the man he once was.
I see folks sneering down their noses at one another here at FR.
That will never bode well for uniting on a decent if flawed GOP candidate, let alone a viable third party.
People are telling time by the second hand, and ignoring the minutes and hours.
Newt stopped being relevant a while ago. Who cares who he endorses? Tennessee is conservative enough to be able to replace Lamar! with a solid conservative.
Cults of personality (and of ANTI-personality) continue to exist.
Lamar, you’re 73. Go home and enjoy your well deserved retirement.
I supported him after Palin declined to run, it was my mistake to do so; he was a bad candidate and would have been totally wiped out in the general had he won the nomination. Totally.
Sorry about that, but it's true.
What a disappointment.
