A pilot who refused to fly his scheduled United Airlines flight to Israel was arrestedwith 300 passengers stuck on the plane for hours while airline officials scrambled to find another pilot.
The United Airlines flight from Newark to Tel Aviv was set to leave early in the week. Usually a non-stop flight, passengers expected to get to their destinations after about 12 hours, but instead were in transit for about 30. Airline personnel refused to let them disembark for hours, passengers said, making us feel like hostages, without food or water, according to one witness.

Article indicated that the flight was cancelled the previous day due to poor condition of the plane (including the engines). It is unclear if the pilot refused to file because of safety issues, or for political ones.
How could the pilot be arrested? I mean he surely could be fired, but arrested? I wonder what the charge was, maybe financially supporting terrorists?
The airlines should know better than hiring jihadist sympathizers as pilots. They are security risks.
You could argue trespassing. The airlines and airport ordered him to leave the plane and he did not. Also as the senior officer he is in control of the passengers and basically held them hostage by refusing to return to the gate.
“How could the pilot be arrested? I mean he surely could be fired, but arrested?”

That is what I wondered, but with the media as we have it today, God only knows what is fact or fiction.
Duh, the dude hijacked the plane and passengers.
He obviously planned this action as he had to review the route and submit his flight plan, check current weather conditions and prepare his charts, etc. It's not like driving a taxi.
Send his azz to Gitmo.
United Airlines has responded to complaints with an apology to customers and an offer of compensation - and clarified that the pilot’s refusal was the result of a work dispute.

You’ve got the wrong TITLE line for the article ... perhaps the Admin can correct the WRONG INFORMATION here ...
It doesn’t say he was arrested ...
A pilot who refused to fly his scheduled United Airlines flight to Israel was eventually removed from the cockpit with 300 passengers stuck on the plane for hours while airline officials scrambled to find another pilot.

Equally concerning is who was on the ground crew.
The description of the plane’s physical condition may indicate that one or more members of the ground crew that vandalized the aircraft. It is a short step from vandalism to sabotage.
I was once held hostage for 8 or 9 hours in O'Hare by a United Airlines mechanics union work dispute. Toss his ass so deep in jail that it costs $20 to send him a postcard.
TI thought a cockpit breach was unpossible (I love that word) but I guess the pilot did not choose to barricade himself in the cockpit.
No name given. Wanna bet it’s a bearded savage name? That should have been the first clue! Never ask a bearded savage to fly a plane into Israel!
Union scumbag abusing passengers as part of a labor dispute. I’m not sure why you would insist on mollycoddling this socialist idiot.
Give him a tube of Vaseline and drop him off in Syria.
They didn’t give his NAME???? Oh yeah, he is a MUSLIM or a MUslim SYMPATHIZER!!
You think he is one of the Robertsons?
United will be out of business within five years.

Wonder if he can drive a bus
Interesting. Like others on this thread, I wonder if he was indeed Muslim.
I’d be going over that plane and baggage with a fine tooth comb if he truly “refused” to fly over a labor dispute.
Like others have said, he basically hijacked the plane and held people hostage on the tarmac. Hijacking gone wrong?
All seems a bit odd and maybe the passengers and press are not being told the truth.
“...The flight was delayed following a maintenance issue. The aircraft was then swapped for another and as a result of the ongoing delay the flight crew exceeded their legally permitted duty hours. “
The aircraft in bad condition was swapped...and then the unnamed pilot refuses to fly?
