Of course, many minorities think admission to elite colleges is just some sort of lucky lottery. If that were the case, then we could place students with SAT scores of 1000-1100 at Ivy League schools, and they would do just as well as students with scores several hundred or more points higher.

The fact is students with SAT scores below 1300 drop out at a far higher rate than students with higher scores. I don't even know if white students in 1300-1400 range can get into Ivy League schools.

Sotomayor is the perfect example of affirmative action. In a competitive world, her abilities, intellect and experience would qualify her as a paralegal.
