FTC turns lights on decorative bulbs

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) may require decorative light bulbs to publish energy labels that provide consumers with information about a bulb's brightness, color, life, energy use, and estimated annual energy cost.

The FTC announced Tuesday it is considering new rules that would require decorative and other specialty light bulbs to comply with the same energy labeling rule that other, more traditional light bulbs have been following since 2010.

The Lighting Facts label can be found on general service light bulbs, such as incandescents, fluorescents, and LEDs.

But, so far, decorative lights have been exempt from the labeling rule.

This comes as part of a potentially broad expansion of the FTC's energy labeling rule, which would allow include new rules for refrigerators, ceiling fans, furnaces, televisions, and air conditioners, the agency said.

The public has until Aug. 18 to comment on the proposed rule.

Sounds like huge makework and gummit bureaucracy self justification to me.

How many people have complained they don’t know the candlepower or scientifically precise hue of a Christmas light or a party lamp?

Red bulbs must have a label stating: “RED”

Similar requirement for Green bulbs, and all other colors.

Light-emitting diodes are now "bulbs?"

How many people have complained...”

Outside of the people in Boulder, Colorado, who wanted to change the stoplight colors at Christmas from red and green to something else that is not a Christmas color, nobody I know. These people need to be fired if that is all they have to deal with.

Some new lamps are made with an LED or more commonly, arrays of them, and have the form factor of bulbs and are called bulbs.

Sure, but do they require the labeling of bulbs? They don't heat by filament, they don't contain gas, they don't consume the same amount of electricity. But because they look like bulbs they have to be treated like bulbs?

Fire 50% of FTC drones. They obviously have too much time on their hands. Normally they would be porn surfing

Ones that are marketed as replacements for ordinary white-light bulbs get labeled today. I don’t know what legal requirements are. But I’ve seen them in places like Home Depot. I tried one once for a floodlight and was underwhelmed. It was stark and harsh and eye fatiguing. I switched to one that had a curly-bulb in a floodlamp envelope and was happier.

Yeah, I bought a few 60watt equivalents that say they only take 2 watts. I wanted to have something that runs off of a 12V battery with an inverter in case of blackouts.

It doesn't cast a light that lights the whole room, but it's cheap on current.

I also picked up a few 13 watt CFLs (claim to be 60W equivalents). They draw a lot more current from the 12v, but they do light up the room a lot more in a pinch.
