CDC: Cases Confirmed In 15 States, Including N.Y., With 25 In Florida Alone

June 16, 2014 6:19 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — First there was West Nile virus. Now health experts are warning about another virus carried by mosquitoes.

The chikungunya virus — or “chik-v” — has sickened tens of thousands of people throughout the Caribbean with high fever and severe pain. Now Americans are coming down with it, too, and there’s fear that it will spread, CBS 2′s Kristine Johnson reported.

“This is not a fatal infection; it’s just a miserable infection,” said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of Vanderbilt University’s Department of Preventive Medicine.

Cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been confirmed in 15 states, including New York. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 25 cases have been reported in Florida alone.

“The chikungunya fever will last for three, four, five days,” Schaffner said. “You’re miserable. Then you’ll get better. We can treat you symptomatically.”

So far, all of the infected Americans have contracted the virus in parts of the world where it is common. But researchers are worried that mosquitoes in the U.S. could pick up the disease by biting infected people.

“There’s a concern that people from the United States who go to the Caribbean might be bitten by infected mosquitoes and then bring this illness, this virus, back to the United States,” Schaffner siad. “We have the kind of mosquito that will transmit this virus here in the U.S.”

Prior outbreaks have occurred in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Late last year, the virus was found for the first time on the Caribbean islands, where more than 100,000 people have been sickened.

“So far, we have no evidence that there are U.S.-bred mosquitoes that have become infected,” Schaffner said.

Oh, I bet they’re keeping a ‘close eye’ on it. More like making sure those illegals who are carrying it cough on as many hard-working Americans as they can. Once they’re weak, the jobs can be taken.

Can you hear the sucking sound? That’s the last few jobs draining. La Raza smiles big time.

ain’t illegal immigration just “grand”? I spent much time in the Carib and was aware of this before I left..like Lyme..American physicians ignore it. Bad for tourism.

It’s all over Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and...... PUERTO RICO. Every mainland city has a nest all ready for the summer.

How come Mosquitos can spread the Chikungunya virus, but they can’t spread the AIDS virus? Is it because our leaders have told us so?

with tens of 1,000s of illegal aliens coming in from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, (all countries on the Caribbean coast) and then being flown all over the country by Obama, there’s no way they are not gong to spread diseases to American citizens ...

Most folks don't know about it but there have been a lot of cases of AIDS in people who swear they don't fool around and are not drug users or homos. Most of these type of cases have been in the south eastern states where there is a high vector population.
If AIDS con be spread by spilled blood, tears, and saliva why can't it be spread by a mosquito biting someone infected then flying off to bite someone else?
We have been lied to since the 80’s and the spread of queer power.
The doctors are lieing and the politicians are lieing. The politicians are lieing for the fag/liberal vote and to prevent a cataclysmic backlash if we ever find out the truth, and the doctors are lieing to preserve their research grants and public position.
It would go hard on both if the public ever found out the truth.

Many times a disease of this type mutates and becomes capable of being spread by airborn bodily fluids from coughing, sneezing, and toilet spray from flushing. Lucky the Chikungunya Virus is not life threatening—yet.

I have questioned the same thing. Horses get an Aids like virus from mosquitoes. We had to have ours tested annually for it. If it can be spread by mosquitoes between horses, why can’t Aids be spread between humans the same way? When I asked the Vet about the disease he said it’s basically “Aids in horses”.

Its not spread person to person directly, it sounds like the fear is that US mosquitoes might get it from them here and spread it.

Because that would put the homosexuals back in the closet faster than a Tornado Warning. Like lepers of old, they would be shunned as a high risk group and no one would want to be anywhere near them.
